Afghanistan unrest stirs worries, but doesn?t shake commitment

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta reaffirmed Tuesday the Obama administration?s determination to persist in seeking a stable government in Afghanistan after the murder of two U.S. military officers by an Afghan soldier inside the Interior Ministry building in Kabul.

The weekend murders were the latest in a wave of ?fratricide? attacks by Afghan soldiers and policemen on American soldiers in Afghanistan.

At a Senate Budget Committee hearing Sen. Lindsey Graham, R- S.C., asked Panetta, ?When it comes to Afghanistan ? is it worth it? What is winning? What?s the benefit of winning? What?s the cost of losing??

?The reason we are there, senator, is because our mission is to dismantle, destroy, and defeat al Qaida and their terrorist allies,? Panetta said. ?Our ultimate goal here has to be an Afghanistan that can control and secure itself and make sure that it can never again become a safe haven where terrorists can plan attacks,?.

He added that ?the cost of losing? is that the Taliban would regain control of Afghanistan and that terrorist groups would regroup there ?and their sole goal is to attack this country.?

No senators asked Panetta whether the fratricide attacks call into question the Obama administration?s strategy of training Afghan military forces so that they can take responsibility for keeping order in the country once most U.S. forces are withdrawn in 2014, as Obama has promised.

Separately, Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Sen. Carl Levin, D- Mich., told reporters Tuesday that if there?s no repeat of the inadvertent burning of Korans in Afghanistan -- which may have triggered the murders of the two Americans -- then ?we will not see a repeat of this kind of violence. I don?t believe the Afghan people want us to leave. I don?t think that most of the Afghan army or police are willing to attack us, or want to attack us any way. I think it?s a very small minority.?

What?s more important, Levin said, is that ?the Afghan police and army are the ones who are putting down the violence? -- ?the riots and demonstrations which followed the Koran burning.

With one exception, other members of the Armed Services Committee said they were worried about the weekend attack and the pattern of fratricide incidents, but didn?t indicate they?d support a quicker drawdown of American forces or an earlier exit date.

Sen. Kay Hagan, D- N.C., said, ?It certainly raises a huge issue if people that we are helping and entrusting then kill our own soldiers.?

Sen. Jack Reed, D- R.I., said Afghan President?Hamid?Karzai and his cabinet needed to block infiltration and to prevent fratricide attacks. They now face ?a test of their commitment to partnering with NATO? and a chance to ?to demonstrate their seriousness? about taking steps to stop fratricide attacks.

He said, ?You want to be very careful and deliberate in this process, but I think it raises a significant issue of the willingness and capacity of the Afghani forces to partner with us.? But he said the ?trajectory has already been set? by President Obama for exit of U.S. forces in 2014.

The certainty of that exit date probably defuses the opposition to the Afghanistan deployment?among some members of Congress.

Calling the weekend killings ?horrible? and saying American forces would need to be ?much more vigorous in vetting our partners,? Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R- N.H., said she did not think the weekend?s events should lead to a change in American strategy.

?We still have a very important interest in Afghanistan,? she said, ?We cannot allow Afghanistan to become a launching pad and a haven for terrorism again. And if we suddenly withdraw from Afghanistan based on these events, we will actually empower those who are committing these acts of terrorism right now in Afghanistan and further encourage additional acts of terrorism.?

But another Armed Services Committee member, Democratic dissenter Sen. Joe?Manchin of West Virginia, said the murder of the U.S. officers ?reinforces what I have always said: that?s an extremely dangerous place. I don?t believe we should be there trying to nation build, trying to change the culture of people ? we shouldn?t, and I don?t think we can do that.?

He added, ?We should get out of there immediately and leave no doubt that we will go after terrorism wherever it may be. Everyone says, ?when you leave, they will all come back.? Well, if they come back with intent to do us harm, we?ll be back.?

But he said he didn?t want to put ?our sons and daughters in a situation where the people they trained are going to be turning their guns on them. It?s ridiculous.?

How to obtain a motorcycle licence

Learning to ride a motorbike will give you access to affordable transport and a hugely enjoyable way to travel. However, obtaining your full licence is not a straightforward process and there are a number of steps to complete before you can buy the bike of your dreams.

Your starting point should be to apply for a provisional motorcycle licence. You will not need to do that if you already have a full car licence, as it entitles you to ride machines of up to 125 cc and 11 kW power output on L plates once you have completed your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT).

If you have to apply from scratch, you need to get hold of form D1 from the DVLA?s website ordering service or a Post Office. Fill out your details and send it off along with proof of identity, a passport photo and a fee of £50, and you should receive your provisional in around three weeks.

Before you can head out on to the public highway, you will need to gain your CBT certificate. Many of the training centres have bikes available for hire, but you will need the correct protective clothing. Wearing a helmet is mandatory and you will also require boots, gloves, visibility aids and something like a Dainese jacket, as a bare minimum.

It is also a good idea to invest in some armoured clothing that provides extra protection for the areas of the body most likely to be the point of impact with the tarmac if you fall off. A Dainese back protector is an excellent choice, while knee and elbow pads will also help to minimise the effect of any accident.

Your CBT course will teach you everything you need to know about bike handling, as well as giving you an overview of how to stay safe. It involves riding at a training centre and on public roads, and you will have to pass an assessment to gain the certificate.

That document will allow you to ride on the public highway with L plates, so that you can gain some experience before your test. It is only valid for two years, so you will need to obtain your licence within that period or take a further CBT course.

At this point, you must decide which of the three routes towards gaining a motorcycle licence you wish to pursue. Each of them involves taking the theory exam, but the practical tests are different.

An A1 licence, which is often referred to as a light motorcycle licence, will allow you to ride bikes up to 125 cc and with a maximum power output of 11 kW ? something that is enough for people who only intend to use one for commuting. The test is taken on a machine of between 75 and 125 cc.

If you see yourself eventually riding more powerful machines, you should aim for an A2 licence. This will allow you to ride any motorbike with a power output up to 25 kW for the two years after your test, before automatically becoming an unrestricted full licence. The practical test for this must be taken on a motorcycle of between 120 and 125 cc, which has a top speed of at least 62 mph.

The final option is the Direct Access route, which is available to anyone aged over 21. You will learn on both 125 cc and more powerful bikes, before taking the test on a machine with a maximum power output of at least 35 kW. If you pass, you will gain an unrestricted category A licence that will allow you to ride any road-legal motorcycle.

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria gave birth to her first child early Thursday, a baby girl who will be groomed to one day become the country's queen.

Victoria's husband, Prince Daniel, said the girl, who is second in line to the Swedish throne, was born at 4:26 a.m. (0326 GMT) at the Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, a suburb of Stockholm. She was 20 inches (51 centimeters) long and weighed 7.23 pounds (3.28 kilograms).

"When I left the room the little princess was sleeping on her mother's chest and they were looking very cozy," an emotional Daniel told reporters. "The little daughter and the crown princess are doing very well."

Victoria, 34, is next in line to the throne held by her father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, since 1973. Sweden changed the constitution in 1980, three years after Victoria was born, to allow the eldest heir to inherit the throne, regardless of gender. Before that female heirs were excluded.

Daniel said the king and Victoria's mother, Queen Silvia, had been informed of the birth and "are very happy."

Victoria married Daniel, a commoner and her former personal trainer, in June 2010. In August last year, the Royal Court announced that Victoria was pregnant.

Sweden's top news sites proclaimed the royal birth with bold headlines Thursday, as TV stations broadcast live from the hospital. The Royal Court made the announcement on its website and, in a modern touch, on its Facebook page.

As is custom when an heir to the throne is born, the Swedish Armed Forces were to celebrate the news with two 21-gun salutes at noon in Stockholm and other cities around Sweden.

The country had eagerly awaited the announcement all night after the Royal Court confirmed after midnight that Victoria had checked in to the hospital.

Daniel said he was "pretty nervous" during the birth and that he cut the baby's umbilical cord. The king will announce the girl's name later this week, he said.

Like in neighboring Scandinavian countries, Sweden's monarch is primarily a figurehead, representing the country as the head of state but with powers limited to ceremonial functions. One of the Swedish monarch's most prominent duties is to hand out the prestigious Nobel Prizes at the annual award ceremony in December.

Victoria is widely admired by Swedes for being down-to-earth and unassuming. It's not uncommon to see her and Prince Daniel venture out of their lakeside palace for a stroll in a nearby public park, with security guards in tow.

Dr. Lennart Nordstrom, who was present during the delivery, said there were no complications. The royal couple had specifically requested that they should not receive any special treatment, he said.

"Both the crown princess and Daniel have been adamant that they should receive the same care as everyone else," Nordstrom told The Associated Press.

The royal family in general, and Victoria in particular, are highly popular in Sweden, which helps explain why the centuries-old monarchy has survived even though the concept of inherited privilege runs counter to the egalitarian character of modern Swedish society.

However, voices calling for a republic have been emboldened in recent years following the scandal surrounding an unauthorized biography of the king in 2010, with claims of seedy night club visits and an extramarital affair.

A close friend of the king caused him further embarrassment when he was caught on tape negotiating with mobsters in an apparent attempt to keep unflattering information about the king's entourage from the public eye.

The Swedish monarchy rests on traditions stretching back to the end of the Viking age, more than 1,000 years ago, but the current dynasty was founded in 1810, when French marshal Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was elected as successor to the throne.

On those two or three occasions per year when the folks at GQ decide to chime in on football, my initial reaction is (to borrow a phrase from Brandon Jacobs) ?stay cute and shut up.?? Most of the time, however, there?s something in there worth repeating.

Especially when the author is our good friend Michael Silver.? Who has rarely been called ?cute? and who even more rarely shuts up.

Silver has compiled an ?oral history? of Tim Tebow.? Since I?m finally forcing myself to trudge through the clumsy, narrative-challenged oral history of ESPN, I was prepared to ping-pong from quote to quote in the hopes of trying to find something instructive and/or entertaining from the broader item.

The new quotes loosely track Tebow?s first almost-full season as a starter.? Here are the ones that stuck out.? For those of you who received your ?I read the 750 pages of the ESPN book and all I got was this lousy T-shirt? T-shirts, it?ll be a snap (relatively speaking) to breeze through the whole thing.

Vikings defensive end Jared Allen has the most insightful comment of anyone.? (Yes, that?s the first time that specific sentence has ever been uttered in all of human history.)? ?You know what the coolest part about the whole thing is?? Allen says.? ?And the reason people hate it?? Because it?s showing that the conventional wisdom of coaches isn?t really necessary.? You know, coaches always think they have the winning theory: ?Our way is the right way!? Blah blah blah!?? Well, here?s a dude that they basically had to scrap the whole offense for and go back to running a college [system].? And they have been successful with it.? Sometimes people think the game is more difficult than it is.? If you find something that works, go with it.? And I don?t really think it has to be a nine-syllable frickin? play.?

ESPN?s Trent Dilfer wades gingerly, until the last part, into the murky waters of the religious aspect of Tebowmania.? ?I don?t have a problem with what Tim Tebow?s doing with [his outspoken Christianity]. I?ve seen him try to articulate why he has the belief and why he believes the things he does, in a very easy way to understand.? He?s not the guy, when the cameras are put in his face, saying, you know, ?Praise to God, because he supernaturally let that ball hit my receiver!?? You know what I mean?? But he?s up-front with it, and he makes many people uncomfortable.? I do have a problem with what the Christian community is doing with his faith, that they are almost becoming a cult following.? I think it?s an ?us? problem, not a ?him? problem.?

Dilfer ultimately is right.? Tebow never has tried to suggest that there?s an Angels in the Outfield component to his success.? But others ? and there are many, and they are zealous ? firmly believe that something more than human is making good things happen for Tebow and the Broncos.? (Except, of course, when they play the Patriots.)

It doesn?t help that guys like Kurt Warner are trying to make the Tebow story into a real-life David-and-Goliath tale.? ?To me, it?s a biblical story,? Warner explains.? ?That?s what the Bible?s full of: ordinary guys who are able to accomplish extraordinary things, not by their own strength and might but by God?s hands coming with them.? And I think it?s very similar to my story and what people took from me going from a grocery-store clerk to a Super Bowl champion.?

The difference between Warner and Tebow is that Warner ultimately got a chance to demonstrate his abilities as a high-level passer.? Tebow is succeeding without those skills, and he?s desperately trying to establish them in order to keep his job.? That?s what V.P. of football operations John Elway wants to see.

?I get encouraged when I see him working within the system and throwing on time, with good feet. That, to me, is where he?s getting better,? Elway says.? ?Consistency and accuracy is gonna come when he gets consistent with his feet.? It?s like a pitcher: The front foot comes down on the same spot every single time. He?s just never really worked on that.?

Former teammate Brandon Lloyd, when asked what Tebow needs to do to become an elite passer on Monday?s PFT Live, had a slightly different focus.? ?I think that what he needs to do is what every quarterback does,? Lloyd said.? ?It?s about the classroom when it comes to being a quarterback.? Understanding how defenses are covering the offense versus the plays and routes that are being run is over half the battle, because then you can have that anticipation and that timing and then you?re not guessing where you?re throwing the ball. . . .? It?s the ability to understand what the defense is doing when you?re going under center on that particular play and understanding the grand scheme of what they?re trying to do to stop you.?

Regardless of what Tebow needs to do to get there, Elway knows that, if Tebow can, everyone in the organization will benefit.

?He has changed the culture of that locker room. The way he handles his life, the way he is with people, the way he is with media ? everybody wants to fight over what he is on the football field, but for the NFL, for the Denver Broncos, he?s perfect,? Elway says.? ?He?s a great kid.? You know, people want him to be successful.? And so do I.? Everybody in this building does, too. If he?s the guy that can be our guy for ten, fifteen years, that?s a hell of a deal for us.?

Elway should rethink calling it a ?hell? of a deal.? Unless, of course, the only way Tebow can ever get to where he needs to be entails doing a deal with the devil.? And/or Don Draper.

They are not a couple they are brother and sister (I?m keeping their mom)so can be separated since they are both still so very young. Similar to sugar gliders but a little different habit wise.They dont make that alarming glider growl/hissing. And unlike gliders they have dont have that offensive odor.They actual make a almost musical like chirping sound. Also nocturnal and similar diet to gliders.

My female is super tame and sweet,will eat fruit from your hand & let you pet her. My male will eat from your hand,let you pet him,but he?s so hyper.The second he?s out of his pouch he just runs around all over your shoulders & pockets if it?s to bright. So if you want a constantly active pet he may be a better option for you.If you prefer a more mellow pocket squirrel than shes your best bet.
