Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum: Barn Finds at the Gilmore

by Nancy DeWitt

I recently toured the Gilmore Car Museum?near Kalamazoo, Michigan. This place should be on every car lover's bucket list! The Gilmore is actually a collection of several museums, including the original Donald S. and ?Genevieve Gilmore collection. Most, like the Classic Car Club of America Museum and Pierce-Arrow Museum, are located in historic or replica barns spread out on a beautiful 90-acre campus. The Gilmore's centerpiece is the new 45,000 square-foot Automotive Heritage Center, which houses a theater, six exhibit galleries, gift shop and a fantastic library. After touring that I wandered over to the?Campania Barn (pictured above), where I found?this "Waltz Blue" 1948 Tucker sedan. It's the lowest original mileage Tucker automobile in existence, with less than 50 miles on the odometer. While most of the cars on display look like they just rolled off the showroom floor, there are some interesting unrestored vehicles as well. This very rare 1924 Barley 5-passenger touring remains in its original, unrestored condition. Only two Barleys (sisters to the Roamer automobile) are known to survive, and both are at the Gilmore. The one pictured here may not be flashy, but it represents an important part of Michigan's automotive heritage. My favorite exhibit was in the G Barn, where the John Stegeman Pedal Car Collection resides. Here I found the 1930 Rolls Royce Phantom II Sedanca DeVille used in the 1967 movie "The Gnome-Mobile."?Donald Gilmore and Walt Disney were close friends, which explains how the Gnome-Mobile's back seat became the only movie set located outside of the Disney Corporation. The public isn't allowed inside the Gnome-Mobile, but after a generous helping of pixie dust several participants attending the National Association of Automobile Museums conference were given a ride. Many thanks to the Gilmore's Director, Michael Spezia, for the tour of the museums, shop, archives and storage area. In case you can't tell from the photo, I had a blast!

RIM's legal chief resigns, layoffs coming soon

According to a Globe and Mail report, RIM?s top lawyer, Ms. Karima Bawa, has resigned from the struggling handset maker. Bawa joined RIM in 2000 and became Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel in 2010. Her resignation follows the departure of Patrick Spence, RIM?s head of global sales, last week.

To make matters even worse, RIM is rumored to start a restructuring program that could trim RIM?s workforce by several thousand jobs. These 2,000 layoffs may be one of several cuts the company makes this year. Sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that RIM may reduce its workforce from 16,500 to 10,00 by early next year.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM ? Today, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of New Mexico announced that it has reached a settlement with the United States government, reclaiming $16,925 on behalf of two African-American men who allege that New Mexico State Police, the Albuquerque Police Department, and Homeland Security stopped them because of their race and then seized their money without evidence of wrongdoing. In September, 2010, New Mexico law enforcement twice detained Stephen Skinner and Jonathon Breasher?a father and son on a road trip to Las Vegas, NV?subjected them to racial insults and allegedly colluded with federal authorities to seize nearly $17,000 in cash. Neither Stephen nor Jonathon were charged with a crime.

Skinner and Breasher?s ordeal began when they were pulled over in Raton, NM by a New Mexico State Trooper for driving five miles over the speed limit. He issued them a written warning and then asked to search their vehicle. They consented and the trooper found $16,925 in cash intended for their trip to Las Vegas in their luggage. The trooper aggressively interrogated the two men, called in a drug dog, partially disassembled their rental car and notified the Drug Enforcement Agency. At one point, the trooper can be heard on his belt tape recording referring to Skinner, a man of nearly sixty years, as ?boy.?

According to Skinner and Breasher, after being detained for nearly two hours by the side of the road, the troopers released them with the promise that ?it wasn?t over yet.? As they entered Albuquerque, the Albuquerque Police Department immediately pulled them over for an ?improper lane change.? Minutes later a federal Homeland Security officer arrived on the scene, seized the money in their luggage, and declared their assets forfeit to the government. They then seized their rental car and dropped them off at the Albuquerque Sunport, stranded with no money or transportation.

?I think they stopped us because we were two black people,? said Skinner. ?I?ve never been treated that way before. That one officer addressed me as ?boy??I?m sixty years old. I?ve never been in trouble before, I pay my taxes, worked all my life, raised my kids, tried to do what?s right?I feel violated.?

In 2002, the New Mexico state legislature passed the New Mexico Forfeiture Act prohibiting state and local law enforcement agencies from channeling forfeited civil assets into their own budgets and instead requiring them to deposit forfeited assets in the state?s general fund to be used for drug treatment, education and substance abuse prevention. Law enforcement agencies have sought ways to circumvent the act since its passage. Last year, a state court judge required Bernalillo County and former Sheriff Darren White to pay more than $3 million in damages to individuals whose cash was seized by sheriff?s deputies, then transferred to the federal government, which then kicked back 80 percent to the county.

?Essentially, New Mexico law enforcement agencies seize civil assets from people who are not charged with a crime and if those people do not have the resources to challenge the forfeitures, the federal government will then kickback the majority of the money to the local police to use at their discretion bypassing the state fund.? said ACLU-NM Executive Director Peter Simonson. ?What?s worse is that in this particular case there appears to be strong indication that the whole affair was racially motivated.?

After the ACLU of New Mexico intervened on Skinner and Breasher?s behalf, the government agreed to return all of the money they seized.

How To Choose The Right iPhone 4S Plans

iPhone 4S plans

It was in October 2011 when the iPhone 4S was introduced to the world, and since then many have bought or shifted to the fifth generation of Apples iconic smartphone. In fact, the company has announced that they were able to sell four million units in the first three days of its release ? the most ever for a phone. There are several features on the iPhone 4S which contributed to its worldwide success and popularity. For example, the phone now features a voice recognition system known as Siri which could activate numerous other built-in apps, and the iCloud service. Many say that Siri is probably the most important feature on the iPhone 4S and one of the most novel applications Apple has ever produced.

The iPhone 4S is also faster thanks to its A5 dual-core processor. Its GPU is also 7x faster than those from its predecessors. These upgrades make it possible to use resource-intensive apps and games seamlessly. The iPhone 4S has an 8MP camera and enhanced illumination sensor making it possible to produce good quality web-ready photos. This smartphone can also take true HD videos.

The major flaw on the iPhone 4 was its antenna, and this is resolved and substantially improved in the iPhone 4S. The phones maximum HSDP data speeds can reach up to 14.4 Mbps which means faster connections, loading, reloading, and downloads. However, owning an iPhone 4S is not cheap. You would have to fork out a hundred dollars monthly for voice minutes, text and data plans. To make sure that you get to make the most out of your phone, you have to choose the right iPhone 4S plans for you.

There are a number of things you should take into account when selecting among different iPhone plans. Fortunately, many carriers make it possible to customize your plan to best fit your budget and preferences. In the US, Sprint would be the best choice for those with a lean budget. For about a hundred bucks each month, you already get to enjoy 900 minutes of voice calls, unlimited texting and data.

Apart from plan costs, you have to also consider network quality. AT&T is considered by many as the one with the best network quality among carriers that offer the iPhone 4S, largely because of its GSM network. A speed test done by PCWorld in 2011 showed that AT&T can offer download speeds of more than 1,400 kbps which closely matches the iPhone 4S theoretical maximum download speed. Just the same, it would be a good idea to know more about how others perceive the network quality of the carrier by reading reviews and inquiring from friends.

Jessica Sanchez: Screwed Over by New American Idol Contract

Jessica Sanchez picked the wrong year to finish second on American Idol.

In the wake of this singer's loss to Phillip Phillips, an Associated Press report took a look into changes made to the season 11 contract for all contestants.

It states that this year's runner-up is only entitled to a "developmental" deal with 19 Recordings, something that could net Sanchez between $30,000-$60,000, depending on the number of single's commissioned by the label. This marks the first time in history the second-place finisher has not been awarded a guaranteed album and $175,000 advance.

Jessica Sanchez Photograph

Yes, Jessica could still see that figure if 19 Records does order a CD; and she'll also bank $50,000 for all future Idol-sponsored public appearances.

But why the change in guarantees?

Because ratings for American Idol are down; a majority of albums from show finalists have not done well; and because the music industry overall has changed: in 2011, nearly 1.3 billion singles were purchased, while only 331 million albums were moved.

Phillips, meanwhile, received $300,000 and an album contract for winning.

Palestinian Airlines Resumes Service After 7 Years

MARKA AIRBASE, Jordan -- Palestinian Airlines is back in the skies after being grounded for seven years by the deepening enmities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Once hailed as a symbol of Palestinian statehood dreams, the carrier is a tiny operation, with just two 48-seat turboprop planes, two weekly flights and a borrowed hub in Egypt.

But Palestinians say just being on the map again is what matters.

"My hands were shaking when I bought the ticket ... and it said the name of the carrier is Palestinian Airlines," said recent passenger Zuhair Mohammed, a 38-year-old teacher from Gaza.

The 15-year-old airline's fortunes have been closely tied to the quest for a Palestinian state.

In the late 1990s, when Palestinians appeared on the verge of a statehood deal with Israel, Palestinian Airlines operated from Gaza International Airport, flew tens of thousands of passengers a year to Middle Eastern destinations and planned to expand to Europe.

Those ambitions were crushed by the outbreak of a Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation in September 2000, following the collapse of U.S.-led peace talks. Over the next year, Israeli troops destroyed the Gaza airport, and Palestinian Airlines was forced to move its base to El-Arish, an Egyptian coastal resort about 60 kilometers from Gaza.

Seven years ago, the airline stopped flying altogether after its reservoir of passengers dried up. It had mainly served Gazans who, starting in 2005, could no longer reach El-Arish because of increasingly frequent Israeli closures of Gaza's borders.

The closures accompanied an Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza in 2005 and intensified with the capture of an Israeli soldier by Gaza militants a year later and the violent takeover of Gaza by the Islamic militant Hamas in 2007.

Until last year, the vast majority of Gaza's 1.7 million residents were locked inside the territory, in part because Egypt went along with Israel and largely kept its Rafah border terminal with Gaza closed.

After the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in 2011, Rafah gradually reopened and Gazans are now able to travel, though restrictions remain, particularly for men under 40, who need Egyptian security clearance.

Palestinian Airlines once again had potential customers. On May 9 it resumed operations, starting with biweekly flights between El-Arish and Marka Airbase in the Jordanian capital of Amman. The new route means Gazans no longer have to travel to Cairo, some 350 kilometers (215 miles) from their territory, to board planes.

Mustafa Abu Dan, a Palestinian civil servant, on Sunday bought four tickets at a Gaza City travel agency for a flight to Amman. He said he's pleased to be saving time and money, but he worried that Gazans and their travel plans will always vulnerable to political upheaval.

"Rafah is the only gate for us to the world now, but still it's linked to the political developments in Egypt," said Abu Dan, 32. "I voice my hope to have our own airport again so we can travel without problems, like others."

In one of the many political twists of Palestine air travel, the carrier is owned by the Palestinian Authority, the West Bank-based political rival of Gaza's Hamas rulers.

Gaza and the West Bank lie on opposite sides of Israel, which has banned virtually all movement between the two territories. Palestinians hope that one day they will be united into a state, with east Jerusalem as its capital. All three were captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast War.

The West Bank does not have an airport, and Israel is unlikely to approve Palestinian Authority plans to build one, citing security concerns. West Bank residents have to fly from neighboring Jordan.

Palestinian Airlines operates two Fokker 50 turboprop planes, remnants of the original fleet that also included a since-retired Boeing 727. The Fokkers were donated by the Netherlands and the 727 by Saudi Arabia.

During the years of idleness, Palestinian Airlines leased one of the Fokkers to an Egyptian carrier, Memphis, whose logo is still painted on the plane. The other plane is marked by black, red and green stripes on the tail, the colors of the Palestinian flag.

On Sunday, the Amman-El-Arish flight carried 27 passengers, and 44 were booked on the return trip later in the day. The flight takes an hour and 35 minutes, more than double the time needed for the direct route over Israel. The airline does not have permission to cross Israeli air space, said regional director Azmi Samaan.

Airline officials said flights to Saudi Arabia for Muslim pilgrims from Gaza are set to begin later this week, and routes to the United Arab Emirates and Turkey are being planned.

The airline hopes it will eventually turn a profit, but for now national pride and making life easier for the Gazans are more important, said Samaan.

"We want the Palestinian flag to continue flying," he said in an interview at Marka Airbase. "This is part of the independent state, to have an airline, no matter what it will cost us."

He acknowledged that the airline also represents the many setbacks over the years for Palestinian statehood hopes. When Gaza's airport was inaugurated in 1998, thousands cheered it as a milestone toward independence.

This time around, flights resumed with little fanfare.

Samaan said it's better than not flying at all.

Former IU head basketball coach Lou Watson dies at 88.

It doesn't appear to be on any of the news sites yet, but Jeff Rabjohns of Peegs is reporting via Twitter that Lou Watson, head basketball coach at IU from 1965-1971, has died at age 88. Watson, a star basketball and baseball player at IU, graduated in 1950 and became an assistant to his mentor, legendary IU coach Branch McCracken, in 1958. Watson replaced McCracken as head coach when Mac retired in 1965.

Star-divide

Unfortunately, Watson's record as head coach was uneven, and he was forced out after the 1970-71 season. Nevertheless, Watson led IU to the 1967 Big Ten championship and recruited reasonably well. Some of his recruits, most notably Steve Downing and Joby Wright, played key roles in the early success of Watson's successor, Bob Knight. Also, Watson coached Indianapolis Washington/Pacers legend George McGinnis in 1970-71, McGinnis's only season at IU. Watson was an athletic administrator at IU until he retired in 1987. He returned to IU in 2009 to visit with current and former players. Rest in peace, Lou, and thanks for your service to IU.

Next Egypt president: Islamist or ex-Mubarak premier?

AFP - Getty Images

Egyptian election officials count ballot papers at a polling station in Alexandria after polls closed Thursday.

By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com

Egypt's first free presidential election could be heading for a contest between an Islamist candidate and a former air force chief who was a leading member of ousted leader Hosni Mubarak's last government.

According to results from 18 out of 27 areas ? put together by the Ahram Online newspaper?? Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Mursi was ahead with 25.59 percent of the vote, while Mubarak's former prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq, was just behind at 25.05 percent.

Leftist Hamdeen Sabahy was in third, according to Ahram's figures, at 21.22 percent.?They and the other candidates are vying for two places in a final run-off election on June 16 and 17.

Official results are not expected until Tuesday.?

'I'm in shock'
Young Egyptian revolutionaries who helped topple Mubarak now face what they see as a dispiriting choice between a conservative Islamist and a hardline member of the old guard.?

"To choose between Shafiq or Mursi is like being asked do you want to commit suicide by being set on fire or jump in a shark tank," Adel Abdel Ghafar wrote on Twitter.

In Egypt's elections, politics is a new family affair

Tareq Farouq, 34, a Cairo driver, told Reuters he was in shock.?"How could this happen? The people don't want Mursi or Shafiq. We're sick of both. They are driving people back to Tahrir Square," he said, referring to the home of the long-running protest camp.

Voters lined up in Cairo to choose from five leading candidates: a socialist, two Islamists, and two with ties to former President Hosni Mubarak. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

This week's first-round vote has polarized Egyptians between those determined to avoid handing the presidency back to a man from Mubarak's era and those fearing an Islamist monopoly of ruling institutions.

'We want to live ... like human beings': Egyptians vote

The election marks a crucial step in a messy and often bloody transition to democracy, overseen by a military council that has pledged to hand power to a new president by July 1.?

The second round threatens further turbulence. Opponents of Shafiq, Mubarak's last prime minister, have vowed to take to the streets if he is elected, Reuters reported.?But to supporters, Shafiq's military background offers reassurance that he can restore security, a major demand of the population 15 months after Mubarak's ouster.?

Israel nervous
Many Christians, who form about a tenth of Egypt's 82 million people, complained of discrimination in Mubarak's day, but were likely to have voted for Shafiq in preference to an Islamist.?

A victory for Mursi, Reuters said, could worsen tensions between resurgent Islamists and the powerful army, which sees itself as the guardian of the state.?

Egypt's elections: A struggle between secularism and political Islam

If Mursi becomes president, Islamists will control most ruling institutions ??but not the military ??in Egypt, the most populous Arab nation, consolidating electoral gains made by fellow-Islamists in other Arab countries in the past year.?

"Now Egyptians will have to choose between the revolution and the counter-revolution. The next vote will be equivalent to holding a referendum on the revolution," Mohamed Beltagy, a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood's party, told Reuters.?

Israel has nervously watched the Islamist rise, especially in Egypt, its old enemy until a 1979 peace treaty. Mursi vaguely advocates a "review" of the pact, but the Brotherhood says it will not tear it up. Shafiq has vowed to uphold it.?

The Brotherhood announced early on Friday that the run-off would be between Shafiq and Mursi after almost all votes were counted, Reuters said.

A member of Shafiq's campaign also said Mursi and Shafiq were in the lead, but that counting was not complete, Reuters reported.?Aides to other candidates consistently put Mursi ahead but gave shifting tallies for second place through the night.?

New Mexico wildfire spreads smoke across state

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ? Firefighters are battling a massive wildfire in southwestern New Mexico that has destroyed a dozen cabins and spread smoke across the state, prompting holiday weekend air-quality warnings.

The fire burned early Saturday through remote and rugged terrain around the Gila Wilderness and has grown to 85,000 acres or more than 130 square miles.

The heavy smoke apparently disoriented six hikers Friday, prompting the New Mexico National Guard to carry out a rescue.

Col. Michael Montoya said one of them had an injured knee and had to be taken to safety by ambulance. The others were able to walk to a secure area.

More than 500 firefighters are battling the blaze that resulted from the merger earlier this week of two lightning-sparked fires. Fire officials say nearly all of the growth has come in recent days due to relentless winds.

The blaze has destroyed 12 cabins and seven small outbuildings, and the privately owned ghost town of Mogollon was placed under a voluntary evacuation order.

The strong winds pushed ash from the blaze 35 to 40 miles away, while smoke from the giant fire spread across the state and into Arizona. The haze blocked views of the Sandia Mountains in Albuquerque, and a smell of smoke permeated the air throughout northern New Mexico.

Health officials as far away as Albuquerque and Santa Fe issued alerts for the holiday weekend, advising people to limit outdoor activities, keep windows closed.

They said the effects on most people would be minor but noted mild throat and eye irritation or allergy-like symptoms could be expected. Officials warned people with heart and lung conditions to be especially diligent in minimizing their exposure to the smoky air.

Meanwhile, in Colorado, officials said heavy air tankers and thousands of firefighters were on standby Friday as fire managers kept a close watch on high winds and hot temperatures at the start of Memorial Day weekend. Fire danger remains high in the southern Colorado foothills and the South Park area.

Two heavy air tankers have been taken to Grand Junction in western Colorado, where the fire danger is highest, U.S. Forest Service spokesman Steve Segin said.

"We've got the resources. We've got the firefighters," Segin said. "We're ready."

The National Weather Service said wind gusts could reach 70 mph Saturday in some western Colorado valleys, with sustained winds of 25 to 40 mph. Most of eastern Colorado also was under a high-wind watch, with sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph and gusts up to 55 mph possible Saturday.

In Southern California, firefighters worked to corral a wildfire that has chewed through 3,100 acres of tinder-dry grass and light brush since it broke out Thursday afternoon east of Julian.

On Friday, the fire forced about 50 people to evacuate an RV park in San Diego County. It earlier prompted the evacuation of about 100 homes in the Shelter Valley area, but residents were allowed to return late Thursday.

The fire was 20 percent contained, said Nick Schuler, battalion chief for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. No injuries or damage to structures were reported.

In Arizona, residents of the historic mining town of Crown King were allowed to return home after being evacuated because of a wildfire about 85 miles north of Phoenix. The fire started May 13 and has burned more than 16,000 acres. It is 35 percent contained, fire officials said.

In Nevada, questions were being raised over fire crews' initial response to a backyard burn that rekindled two days later, destroying two homes in a rural community and scorching 7,500 acres.

A 911 recording obtained by The Associated Press showed a resident called Sunday to report that a neighbor's permitted burn in the Topaz Ranch Estates was out of control. Volunteer firefighters with the East Fork Fire Protection District arrived at the scene and then left, apparently without extinguishing the blaze.

Gusty winds rekindled the fire Tuesday, and it spread quickly through thick brush and dry grasses. Two homes and 17 outbuildings were destroyed.

District Fire Chief Tod Carlini did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment Friday.

Obama strikes at Romney in Iowa, seeks 2008 energy

(AP) ? President Barack Obama delivered his harshest rebuttal yet to rival Mitt Romney on Thursday, dismissing his challenger's claims as "a cowpie of distortions" while seeking to rekindle the all-but-faded Iowa magic that launched him in 2008. Escalating his criticism of Romney's background as a venture capitalist, Obama said it wasn't adequate preparation for the presidency.

"There may be value for that kind of experience, but it's not in the White House," Obama said.

The speech, to a cheering Iowa crowd of about 2,500 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, represented a new intensity for Obama's campaign as Romney begins to hit his stride carrying the Republican standard. It came as Iowa, soured by the direction of the nation and its economy, has drifted away from Obama since his 2008 caucus victory over Hillary Rodham Clinton made him the Democratic front-runner.

While Obama carried the state in the general election by a comfortable margin that year, polls this year have shown voters narrowly preferring Romney, who plans to wage his own major effort in Iowa.

Trying to cast Romney as out of touch with working-class voters, Obama declared that hard work hasn't led to higher incomes. "Higher profits haven't led to better jobs," he said. "And you can't solve that problem if you can't even see that it's a problem."

Obama pointedly chose the same turf where Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, once declared that corporations are people. Obama said Romney would roll back regulations and return to policies that he said helped create the recession and would increase government deficits.

Reacting to Romney's charge last week that Obama had created "a prairie fire of debt," the president countered that Romney's tax plan is "like trying to put out a prairie fire with some gasoline."

In a statement issued after the speech, Romney spokesman Ryan Williams said: "A president who broke his promise to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term has no standing when it comes to fiscal responsibility."

Earlier, in blue-collar Newton, Iowa, once the prosperous headquarters of Maytag appliances, Obama visited a wind-turbine plant to push his alternative energy agenda and delivered a message that could as well have applied to all of Iowa. "Yeah, we're facing tough times, but we're getting through them, we're getting though them together," he said.

While offering only six of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, how Iowa voters ultimately judge Obama is expected to be an important factor in the race.

"Last time it was a lot more exciting. It was a new thing," said Nancy Bobo, a Des Moines Obama volunteer and one of his earliest Iowa backers in 2008. "Today, we're all just very serious."

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, has made the struggling economy the centerpiece of his campaign. But Obama can point to comparatively low 5.1 percent unemployment in Iowa, where stable financial services and strong agriculture sectors buoyed the economy while manufacturing has struggled to rebound.

Romney had made the comment about corporations as he argued against raising taxes as a way of shoring up Social Security and Medicare. Members of the audience interrupted, calling for increased taxes on corporations, and Romney responded: "Corporations are people, my friend. ... Everything corporations earn ultimately goes to people."

The comment has been used by opponents to characterize Romney, a former private equity firm executive, as more comfortable in the boardroom than the shop floor.

Obama's campaign has emphasized episodes in which Romney's former firm closed plants and laid off workers, and has aired a stinging TV ad on the subject in Iowa, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

In his fairgrounds' speech Thursday, Obama said private-equity firms can sometimes create jobs. "But when maximizing short-term gains for your investors rather than building companies that last is your goal," he added, "then sometimes it goes the other way. Workers get laid off. Benefits disappear. Pensions are cut. Factories go dark."

Obama himself has struggled to attract blue-collar voters, keys to winning struggling swing working-class regions such as southeast Ohio, western Pennsylvania and rural Iowa. Newton is the seat of Jasper County, Iowa, where unemployment was 7.1 percent in April, higher than Iowa's average but down sharply from last winter.

While Iowa is known for its first-in-the-nation caucuses, it also is a coveted general election state, despite its small electoral total. Democrat Al Gore carried the state by less than a percentage point in 2000, followed by Republican George W. Bush's 2-point victory in 2004.

Obama has already spent more than $2.6 million on advertising, a pace as aggressive as in any other battleground state. He's been a regular visitor, and was making his second trip in a month.

Yet the president's approval rating here has been stuck below 50 percent for over two years, softened in part by criticism from Republicans campaigning for Iowa's leadoff caucuses.

Polls show Iowans also have become increasingly bothered by federal spending, an issue Romney stoked in Des Moines last week in a visit where he promised to shrink the deficit.

Iowans, many of whom met Obama in the 2008 campaign, also are disappointed by what they hoped would be a transcendent presidency, said J. Ann Selzer, the longtime director of The Des Moines Register's Iowa Poll.

"You hear disaffection. You hear them say, 'This isn't what I paid for,'" Selzer said. "The guy they sent there to recast things wasn't able to do it."

Privately updating Senate Democrats on Thursday, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said the president has several possible paths to collecting the 270 electoral votes he needs for victory in November. But he noted that Romney, the Republican Party and allied super PACs are likely to have a great deal of money to spend. Obama vastly outspent Republican John McCain in winning the White House four years ago, an advantage that Democrats appear unlikely to command in 2012.

Romney senses the opening. He too has cultivated an Iowa network. Indeed, he campaigned aggressively for the 2008 caucuses during his narrowly losing bid for the state's delegates. Romney and the Republican National Committee have hired state directors and are hiring staff to run a dozen or more offices planned for Iowa.

And his campaign has begun running television ads in Iowa.

The advantages of owning condos and lofts consist of both their desirable pricing and their fairly low upkeep specifications. When compared to detached residential housing, a condo or loft gives a lower-cost option that keeps weekends free of endless lawn mowing and home improvement projects. Furthermore, purchasers will often find a condo or a loft in a prime urban location, for simple access to the amenities of city living. Why Not Try Here

Your 1st step when searching for a loft is to secure the aid of an skilled real estate agent. You should search for somebody with a lot of information from the condo and loft marketplace who will likely be in a position to explain the total process.

Let's take, for instance, an apartment in a condominium not far from the subway, on Yonge St., and at a relatively low value. It could appear a good alternative, at first. Nevertheless, you ought to keep in mind that in real estate if some thing sounds as well excellent to be correct, it really is not great. The reason why an apartment costs so tiny in such a prestigious location is the fact that the building is very old and demands repairs. This is right away reflected in the condo fee, which can be three times greater than a fee in a new condominium. On top of that, the building may be only remotely associated to condominiums because it had no amenities present in modern day condominiums in Toronto - no pool, no health club, no area for parties, etc.

Try THIS Web-site You can choose between two sorts of condominium. Some Condos accessible are skyscrapers, very sophisticated with a private entrance to take pleasure in privacy. Moreover, you'll be able to discover condominiums simply according to your funds and your way of life. Most people search for the condominiums near their operating spot to decrease the time of travel to their work.

Occasionally you feel that the condominium you are choosing isn't appropriate for your family needs i.e. it might lack a playground, or it may not be close to any school for the kids. It's not truly a problem. Certified real estate agents are accessible to solve your minor difficulties. They would surely suggest you Condos according to your specifications. In the event you had been seeking for Condos close to a school, the agents would surely recommend you an appropriate one.

In Toronto there are a number of aspects that you require to take into account when searching for a property. Toronto is a very big city and there is certainly no one single clearly defined center, and there's no location with the most pricey or the least costly real estate. Toronto is much more like a conglomeration of such centers. The city is like a multilayered quilt consisting of hundreds of fairly huge neighborhoods. The value of each neighborhood is determined by such parameters as proximity to a certain center, convenience of public transportation, proximity to significant highways, the median earnings of families, ethnic composition of the population, and so on. As a result, each district consists of a certain type of housing, and is targeted to certain groups of people.

Toronto has indeed earned it is reputation because the top marketplace for condominiums in North America with over 260 projects planned or already beneath construction. "Deteriorating affordability levels in main Canadian centers have led to the resurrection in the condominium life-style in recent years," said Michael Polzler, executive VP of Re Max Ontario-Atlantic Canada.

A condo or loft is excellent for people who do a excellent deal of traveling. For certain professionals, like pilots or salespeople, condo ownership might be a lifesaver. Instead of spending time off mowing the lawn, trimming the trees, or cleaning the gutters, experts will spend their time off relaxing at home. The homeowner's association typically handles all typical maintenance projects, enabling busy professionals to enjoy their time off. On the one hand, living in condos and lofts indicates living in close quarters with other residents. Nonetheless, the style, location, and maintenance-free life-style associated with these living spaces tends to make condo life an attractive alternative for several property owners. Just before making a purchase, consumers must consult a real estate skilled in their location, to discuss the ins and outs from the condo industry..
