SAN JOSE, California (Reuters) - Jury selection began on Monday in a high-stakes U.S. patent battle between Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, the culmination of more than a year of pretrial jousting with billions of dollars in the balance.
Apple and Samsung, the world's largest consumer electronics corporations, are waging legal war around the world, accusing each other of patent violations as they vie for supremacy in a fast-growing market for mobile devices.
The fight began last year when Apple sued Samsung in a San Jose, California, federal court, accusing the South Korean company of slavishly copying the iPhone and iPad. Samsung countersued.
The stakes are high, with Samsung facing potential U.S. sales bans of its Galaxy smartphones and tablet computers, and Apple in a pivotal test of its worldwide patent litigation strategy.
Long lines outside the federal courthouse in San Jose marked the beginning of the trial as lawyers, media and observers flooded the building to watch the proceedings.
A 10-member jury will hear evidence over at least four weeks, and it must reach a unanimous decision for Apple or Samsung to prevail on any of their claims.
That the jurors will hail from Silicon Valley, where Apple is an icon and major employer, will be something for Samsung to consider during the jury selection, said James Dobson, a jury consultant with Empirical Creative.
"Although certainly if I were Samsung, I would be concerned about what prospective jurors think about Apple, given that it's a huge employer there," Dobson said, "by and large jurors want to do the right thing and decide the case on the merits."
It has been tough going so far for Samsung in the case. U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh halted U.S. sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1, giving Apple a significant early win. This was followed by a pretrial ban on the Galaxy Nexus phone. Samsung has appealed both orders.
The trial is expected to last at least four weeks.
The case is U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al, No. 11-1846.

The National Weather Service confirmed there was a tornado in the Manomet section of Plymouth last Tuesday.
Three waterspouts formed off the coast shortly after 4 p.m., rapidly moved onshore and caused minor damage at White Horse Beach between 4:08 and 4:09 p.m., according to information posted on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration web site.
The path of the tornado was 15 yards wide and 45 yards long, the notice on the website states.
Damage from this tornado included a crank-out window torn off its hinges and shattered against the side of a house. A beach umbrella and a few awnings were also damaged.
Sand and other debris was hurled into the air above the level of condominiums along the beach, according to the National Weather Service.

Use a spoon to glob half the peanut butter mixture onto the cooled shortbread crust, and then use an offset spatula to gently spread it into a roughly even layer (don't worry if it's not perfect.) Lay banana slices across the entire surface. Glob the rest of the peanut butter mixture all across the top. Again, use your offset spatula to gently spread the peanut butter mixture over all the banana slices (you want the banana slices to be covered because bananas oxidize and turn brownish, so the bars are prettier if you can't see them. It's hard to get them all covered, but just be patient and keep working the peanut butter around, cleaning off your spatula now and then.) Chill the bars for at least 3 hours.
While the bars are chilling, preheat the to 400 degrees F and cover a baking sheet with aluminum foil. Lay out the strips of bacon on the baking sheet and bake for 17-20 minutes or until crisp. Let bacon drain and completely cool on a paper towel covered plate.
When the bars are chilled, lightly drizzle the surface with honey (they're already very sweet, so don't be heavy-handed), and crumble bacon pieces over the surface (or top with pretzels as desired). Gently use the sling to pull the bars out and cut them on a cutting board. Serve them within a day or two (before the bananas get too brown), storing them in an airtight container in the fridge if needed.

Although erectile dysfunction (ED) has been shown to be an early warning sign for heart disease, some physicians and patients still think of it as just as a natural part of "old age." But now an international team of researchers, led by physicians at The Miriam Hospital, say it's time to expand ED symptom screening to include younger and middle-aged men.
In an article appearing in the July issue of the American Heart Journal, they encourage physicians to inquire about ED symptoms in men over the age of 30 who have cardiovascular risk factors, such as smoking, obesity or family history, and in all men with type 2 diabetes.
As many as 30 million American men suffer from ED, or the inability to maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. ED and cardiovascular disease share a common cause: narrowing of the arteries, resulting in reduced or obstructed blood flow to the organs. They also share similar risk factors, including smoking, diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. Because the penile arteries are just a fraction smaller than the arteries supplying blood to the heart, symptoms of conditions that can narrow the arteries, such as arteriosclerosis, are likely to present first in the form of erection problems. That's why it is also believed that the more severe the ED, the greater the risk of heart disease-related events, such as heart attack and stroke.
"Erectile dysfunction represents an important first step toward heart disease detection and reduction, yet many health care providers and patients assume it's just a sign of old age, so it may not be something that comes up during an annual physical with a younger man who doesn't fit the ED 'stereotype,'" says lead author Martin Miner, M.D., chief of family medicine and co-director of the Men's Health Center at The Miriam Hospital.
"That's why we urge physicians to discuss sexual function with the majority of their male patients including diabetic men of all ages and men over the age of thirty with some of the traditional heart disease risk factors, like smoking or a family history," he adds.
Although not all men with ED are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, Miner says it is the physician's responsibility to make that determination based on aggressive workup and testing. If the patient is found to be at risk, the patient can then receive intensive risk factor management.
Miner and colleagues conducted a literature review of 40 studies that suggest ED is a significant predictor for cardiovascular disease in two populations: men under the age of 60 and men with diabetes. Their analysis supports several widely-held theories, including the role of ED as a significant red flag for cardiovascular disease in younger and middle-aged men.
For example, in the Mayo Clinic's Olmsted County Study, a large, epidemiological study cohort of men from Olmsted County, Minnesota, men 40 to 49 years old with ED were twice as likely to develop coronary artery disease as those who did not have ED. However, ED had less predictive value for men 70 years and older.
Several studies, including a large analysis of more than 6,300 men enrolled in the ADVANCE (Action in Diabetes and Vascular Disease: Preterax and Diamicron Modified-Release Controlled Evaluation) trial, suggest ED is a particularly powerful indicator of cardiovascular disease in diabetic men as well, prompting researchers to call for ED symptom screening in all men with type 2 diabetes.
Miner points out early identification of men at risk for cardiovascular disease has the potential to lower health care costs and improve outcomes.
"There may be a 'window of curability' in which we can intervene early and stop the progression of heart disease," he says. "Also, it may be possible to someday use erectile function as a measurement to tell us if preventive interventions for heart disease are working."

A European-built rocket roared into space from South America Thursday (July 5) carrying two new satellites on very different missions.
The unmanned?Ariane 5 rocket?blasted off from a pad at the Guiana Space Center in Kourou, French Guiana, to send an American communication satellite and European weather-monitoring spacecraft into orbit. Liftoff occurred at 5:36 p.m. EDT (2136 GMT).
Riding the heavy-lift Ariane 5?rocket into space?were the communications satellite EchoStar 17, built for the U.S. company Hughes Network Systems, ?and Europe's third Meteosat Second Generation weather satellite, which is also known as MSG-3. The satellites' launch was managed by European rocket provider Arianespace, builder of the Ariane 5 booster.
"By orbiting these two satellites, we have once again demonstrated the flexibility of Ariane 5 ? which was capable of simultaneously launching one of the?largest telecommunications satellites ever built?for an American private operator, along with one of the most capable meteorological satellites developed for a European government organization," Arianespace Chairman & CEO Jean-Yves Le Gall said in a statement after the launch.
The EchoStar 17 satellite is a huge spacecraft that weighs 13,448 pounds (6,100 kilograms) at liftoff. It is a next-generation broadband satellite designed to provide services to users in North America for 15 years. [Amazing Rocket Launch Photos
The MSG-3 spacecraft is the latest weather satellite to join Europe's Meteosat fleet in space. The 4,409-pound (2,000-kilogram) satellite is designed to provide high-resolution images of Europe, Africa and the North Atlantic to help meteorologist generate more accurate?weather forecasts.
The satellite is currently being controlled by the European Space Agency's (ESA) operations center in Darmstadt, Germany. But after a testing period to ensure the satellite is operating properly, control of the MSG-3 spacecraft will be turned over to its owners: the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), ESA officials said. Once that handover occurs, the satellite will be rechristened Meteosat-10, they added.

Online social networks, notably Facebook, centralize our virtual interactions with friends and family. Financial management apps, such as Mint.com , act as hubs for personal finance. A new type of app that builds on this same premise of centralization is the online family organizer, a one-stop shop for household management. Among the newcomers in the space is Doxo (free), a website that lets you back-up important family documents, manage household payments, and connect with utility and service providers.
While Doxo is off to a strong start in helping shape what online family organizers will be, it acts a little too much like a filing cabinet and not enough like the matriarchs and patriarchs who have traditionally managed families by keeping important information about people in their heads. It's the people part that's missing. There are no options in Doxo for simply listing the people in the family and associating information or documents to them. So while you can upload your marriage certificate, there's no shared calendar for reminding your spouse of your upcoming anniversary. Connect a healthcare provider's information to your Doxo account, and you can see statements regarding hospital visits, but you can't associate them to, say, your son.
Another such service, AboutOne (beta) (free, 3 stars) has the opposite problem. It's well-thought out in how it handles people, but doesn't support payments and bills. In some sense, it's less useful than Doxo, though, because at least with Doxo you have a reason to log in frequently?to keep an eye on your bills?and therefore you'll use the site more. With AboutOne, I could easily imagine setting up an account, filling in important information, and then forgetting all about it in two or three months. And while I wouldn't classify the family tree and genealogy website Ancestry.com as a family organizer, it does have a lot of the same features, including the ability to record important details about family members and upload family documents, keepsake photos, and more.
When you set up an account in Doxo, it takes several measures to help keep your documents protected. First, every login consists of a username, password, security question, and security image. Each stage of a login occurs on a new screen, too, a tougher system for hackers to crack. And because it was founded by a team who had a background in monetary security, Doxo treats every file you upload to it as it were money. It's very secure.
The site contains some pre-populated sections, particularly for connecting with service providers, but you can create your own folder structures, too. You can name the sections whatever you want to store, for example, copies of your medical history, your last will and testament, or paperwork related to your job. I do wish more suggestions came with the account, though. Seeing how other people use Doxo might have given me more ideas beyond what I could think of by myself on the spot. I'd love to see a list of common folder names or some other suggestion mechanism.
One neat feature in the billing and services area is the ability to set a price-limit on bills that autopay. If a payment exceeds a certain amount, Doxo will alert you and require you to authenticate and approve the bill before it's paid.
Online family organizers are still in their infancy, and while I like where Doxo is heading with its free service, I would like to see it include more areas for storing information about people. Family first.?

Sometime in the last year, I gave up on carrying a camera. My phone is compact, quick, has the ability to share photos directly and, at least to my eye, produces photos that are nearly comparable to my $700 interchangeable lens camera. In most contexts, I stand by that ??on Facebook, in iPhoto, or on Instagram, my iPhone photos look fine. Great, even.?
But one thing I noticed when I first used a Retina iPad, which automatically pulled in my old iPhone shots from the cloud, was that these "good enough" photos looked awful. Grainy, blotchy and even kind of blurry. Evidently the new Retina MacBook has the same effect. Marco Arment, creator of Instapaper, says it's driving him back to his DSLR:
As part of my 2012 computer-setup shuffle, I also replaced my laptop with a Retina MacBook Pro, and the first thing it screams for is a high-resolution desktop wallpaper. Great, I thought, I?ll just use one of my photos. (On my desktop, I use a solid gray background, but on my laptop, I like to have a bit of fun. And it would be a crime to put a solid gray background on that screen.)
Almost nothing I?ve shot since 2010 is usable.
He's so disappointed with his cellphone photo quality that he's migrating back to a Canon 5D Mk II, which isn't just a nicer camera, it's one of the nicest consumer cameras ever made.

The Retina MacBook is a premium product for now, but few doubt that Apple, and other computer manufacturers, will move to Retina-grade displays across the board. It's just a matter of price and time. This is great in all ways but one: it's going to make our photos look like crap.
It's not a megapixel problem, exactly. Most common smartphone photo sizes compare favorably to even a Retina MacBook's screen:
Even a 5MP smartphone, such as the first iPhone 4, shoots photos that are about the same resolution as the Retina MacBook's screen:
An 8MP camera, like the iPhone 4S's, produces significantly larger photos. So what's the problem? Photo quality.
Cellphones shoot relatively high-resolution photos, but do so with a much smaller sensor than a dedicated camera. This means there's less room on the sensor for each pixel to gather light, which means there's more noise in the photos. And then there's the issue of optics ??a dedicated camera will be shooting through a larger, more expensive lens, which ensures a level of sharpness that it's hard to get with a smartphone's tiny optical system. In other words, while photo resolution is the same, photo quality is much lower.
I, and millions like me, have tolerated the lower quality of smartphone photos because it's rarely been visible, at least since the iPhone 4/Droid/Evo era. (That's when the "the best camera is the one you have with you" pro-phone-camera sentiment really took off.) And with current screens, you have to blow the photos up, as above, to even see these imperfections. Put an iPhone 4 photo next to an S90 photo at a typical display resolution and you can't really tell the difference:
If you know what to look for (dynamic range and saturation, mostly), you can tell that the photo on the left came from a cellphone. If you're not picking nits, though, you won't notice, unless you're using a large Retina screen. Few of us are right now, but within a couple years, super-high resolutions will be the norm. Then, looking at our old cellphone photos will feel like watching SD cable on an HDTV. It's going to be horrible, and it's going to make us all feel like we jumped the gun a little. Good enough won't be good enough anymore.
It's a stretch to say that super-high-res screens are going to reverse the tide, and stop the rapid replacement of cameras by cellphones. That, at least for most applications, is still inevitable. But with Retina-grade screens, the dominant display and camera technologies are falling out of sync for a while. Cellphone cameras will one day shoot clean enough photos to cleanly display at full resolution on a Retina screen. Just, not yet. And not terribly soon.
That doesn't mean you have to spend $1,500 on a new DSLR or $700 on a compact interchangeable lens camera just to take Christmas photos ??a $300 point-and-shoot will do just fine. And it doesn't mean that you need to stop taking pictures with your phone; I'll still take the vast majority of mine with my 4S, if only to throw them on Instagram and Facebook.
But it does mean that it might be a good idea to keep a real camera around for a few more years.
So what if you have been the best mum, or a loving dad in the past, you now have an additional expectation to meet; that of being a good grandparent. When it comes to grandparenting, it is akin to honing your parenting skills and what beats being the best? Absolutely nothing.

The best part of being a grandparent is that you get to revisit your childhood, play with innocence and recreate memories of a different kind altogether. In a family, if parents are the building blocks, grandparents become the base pillars and the cement that holds the family in place, at all times. Grandparenting is no rocket science. Offer to babysit the child in case your son/daughter is a working dad/mom. New parents will obviously need someone around to help about with caring for the child. Do your bit to help your child, but remember never to overdo things, for it may seem to be intruding on the young parents. Strengthen your bond with your grandchild by making every visit interesting and meaningful. Even if you are staying a mile away from your grandchildren and cannot meet them very often, make it a point to call and ask about them; besides, do whatever it takes to make them want to come back to meet you.

Make everyday activities fun and interesting for the new learner, you never know your grandchild might enjoy doing what you do best. Every once in a while get the family together and spend time with your entire family.
