Ozon.ru: so far so good | beyondbrics

By Ben Aris of bne

When Maelle Gavet (pictured) first arrived in Russia as a student in the days following the fall of the Soviet Union, the shops were empty and the phones didn?t work properly. Two decades on, she heads Russia?s leading e-commerce site Ozon.ru ? Russia?s answer to Amazon.com ? that is well on its way to turnover of $1bn a year.

Ozon was well ahead of its time, launching only two years after Amazon at a time when even bricks and mortar retail in Russia was in its infancy.

?Ozon was very early into the game, launching even before there was really a functioning internet in Russia,? says Gavet. ?We are lucky, we have shareholders with a very long-term horizon.?

It is still very early days for Russia?s e-commerce sector but its development is following the same path as traditional retail: a few market leaders have emerged and are rapidly grabbing market share as the rising tide of higher incomes lifts everyone.

Ozon started life as an online bookstore and has grown into by far the largest e-commerce business in Russia. ?Ozon.ru is made up of four businesses,? said Gavet, sitting in the company?s relatively modest offices in the leafy Sokol district of northern Moscow. ?Ozon.ru is an online retailer, O-courier focuses on shipping, Ozon.Travel, and our most recent acquisition Sapato is the leading online shoe and accessory retailer.?

Revenues from Russia?s internet are growing at 30 per cent a year. A survey by market researcher VTsIOM in September suggests that 60 per cent of the population uses the internet compared with just 24 per cent in 2006. The volume of online business is growing even faster: last year, Russians spent an estimated Rbs554bn ($17.8bn) on goods bought from online shops, consumers sent Rbs167bn through the internet using online payments systems, and advertisers spent Rbs24bn on contextual ads and another Rbs16bn on media advertising such as banner ads, according to a survey by the Russian Association of Electronic Communications and the Higher School of Economics.

As the market leader, Ozon?s sales are outpacing the rest of the sector and have grown from $19m in 2005 to top $300m in 2011 and were up 80 per cent that year alone. Gavel says the goal is to become a billion-dollar-a-year company and it is ?not going to take another 10 years to get to that point?. The value of the online retail sector is likely to hit $100bn by 2020, up from its current $6bn, according to some estimates.

?About half the population is already online and of that some 20 per cent have bought something using the internet,? says Gavet. ?In 2011, there were about 10m to 15m buyers online, but this is still growing very fast and we expect this to rise to 20m this year. Ecommerce companies are all looking for that famous scale effect and this is still not happening.?

With its basic building blocks in place the company has already moved to the second phase of broadening its offering and building a business platform other companies can use, in addition to its own core retail business lines.

In 2011, Gavet managed to bring in $100m of fresh investment and her life was made easier by first the Mail.ru IPO in London and then the Yandex IPO, which had the effect of focusing international investors on the potential of the Russian internet.

Ozon was raising money with no particular purpose in mind but immediately spent a chunk of it buying the shoe retailer Sapato.ru, itself a local start up by Fast Lane Ventures, a Russian incubator that focus on online retail and the company?s first major exit. (Financial details of the deal have not been made public.)

?Ozon is on its way to becoming the biggest online platform in Russia. We have all the key logistics and marketing in place, but there is still a lot of work to do,? says Gavet. ?The plan is to build up direct sales, where we will buy goods from suppliers and sell them on to customers. This is already happening on Ozon.ru.?

Sapato is a straight forward bolt on retail addition to the goods and services Ozon already offers. But in October the company decided it wanted to experiment with the daily coupon business. Rather than go head to head with the well-established players on the market, Ozon held a tender to find a partner, won by Kupikupon, one of Russia?s three big coupon discounters to develop and run the white label Ozon Bonus.

?The site is already running and in just a few weeks we have seen the number of users up several hundred per cent. It is early days now, but for us it is very interesting, as this is just another channel for us to sell our services and tap into a much wider audience offered by Ozon,? says Iskander Khanbaev, head of marketing and development at Kupikupon.

With Russia?s e-commerce growth easily outpacing that of traditional retail, it is only a matter of time before Ozon becomes Russia?s third big internet IPO.

?We have no calendar for an IPO as we are still very early in our development. We want to reach a billion dollars of turnover first. There is still a lot of work to do,? says Gavet.

Intertops Casino $15K Slots Winner Takes VacationST. JOHNS, ANTIGUA, October 24, 2012 ? Karen G., a marketing manager from Oregon, had a night to remember at Intertops Casino recently. In two hours her account rose to just over $15,250 when she decided to call it a night. She has something special in mind for her husband this Christmas.

It started for Karen when she won $8,859.55 playing Cleopatra?s Gold, an Egyptian-themed 20 line slot with a random jackpot that was pretty loose the night of her winning spree. Then she went on to play Texan Tycoon, an oil well-themed slots game also with a random jackpot, where she got lucky during the Free Game Feature and added another $6,400 to her balance.

?OK, so it?s not enough to retire on,? laughed the slots jackpot winner. ?But it?s sure going to make for a nice Christmas! I?m going to surprise my husband and take him on a great vacation with my winnings. It?s always nice to be able to get away with him.?

?It was like that game had just been waiting for me to come play it. The first person I had to tell was Suzanne, my VIP manager at Intertops,? Karen said. ?She?s the first person I whine to when I lose so I thought she should be the first person to share in my excitement!?

University of Florida: Where Fitness Is a Way of Life - Fit Bottomed Girls

Home / Featured / University of Florida: Where Fitness Is a Way of Life

Just one of the many fitness options at the?University of Florida!?Photo courtesy of UF RecSports, Facebook

The first time I saw the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Fla., I was blown away by the number of people out running and biking?in January. I had come down from Michigan, and, well, let?s just say that not too many people were climbing over the snow drifts to get in a jog, you know?

Upon attending UF, I learned that the culture of physical fitness is an important aspect of the university, and it?s not only the moderate winter temperatures that encourage it. The University of Florida Department of Recreational Sports provides multiple indoor recreation facilities, nine fields, two pools, six outdoor court facilities and a gym.

Get Out of the Sun

The big draw for fitness enthusiasts is Southwest Recreation Center, a state-of-the-art, 140,000-square-foot facility with a 14,000-square-foot strength and conditioning room, six indoor basketball courts (which work very nicely for volleyball, I can say from experience), six racquetball courts, a multipurpose gym for indoor soccer, handball and basketball, a 15,000 square-foot split-level cardio room, and all the newest, most up-to-date equipment. There?s also a 1/9-mile indoor track, two massage therapy rooms, a personal training studio, a special fitness assessment center, three activity rooms, and a social lounge complete with flat screen televisions, WiFi and a smoothie bar.

If that?s not quite enough, there?s a second facility, the Student Recreation and Fitness Center, with a number of options, and students can always hit the weight room in the O?Connell Center. You know, where the Gators play.

Phew!

Enjoy the Florida Sunshine

Once you step outside (and, let?s be honest?many students choose UF for the sunny weather, including this one!), there?s even more fit fun to be had. Students can sweat it out on 32 tennis courts, five basketball courts, four racquetball/handball courts, three volleyball courts, a skate park and a roller hockey rink, not to mention numerous full-size fields for football and other outdoor sports. And, my personal favorite, nine sand volleyball courts where the competition, at least back in my day, was no joke.

If students go just a few miles south of campus, they?ll find Lake Wauburg, a park where students and faculty can enjoy the outdoors in as physically daunting or as relaxing a way as they please. There?s boating, water-skiing, a climbing wall, disc golf, and even more, and it?s all free for current students.

Get to Class!

As you?ve probably guessed, there are an enormous number of group fitness classes?from which to choose (indoor, outdoor, cycling, strength, mind/body, etc.). Like, we?re talking more than 125 classes weekly. Not bad, right?

And that?s not the only learning available. UF?s Fitness Assessment Center provides students with a free assessment of their current fitness, and the staff is trained to help students use those results to improve their current lifestyle or sport.

Find a Team

Like most other universities, UF has a strong intramural sports program giving students, faculty and staff an opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports at all different levels. Wondering what I mean by ?wide variety?? This fall?s schedule includes indoor soccer, indoor volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, softball, flag football, kickball, racquetball, tennis and basketball. And that doesn?t even get into all the one-off tournaments held each semester.

Did you take advantage of programs and facilities like these when you were in college? Or, if you?re currently in school, how does this match up with your university?s fitness facilities? ?Kristen

Exciting uses of hi-tech space know-how for business and beyond -- space technologies event at National Space Centre on Thursday, Oct. 18

How space science is making a world of difference to life on earth has been spelt out at the European Parliament by a leading University of Leicester scientist.

Professor Alan Wells -who was instrumental in establishing the National Space Centre in Leicester was speaking last week at the European Parliament on the growing importance of space technologies for earthbound applications.

The Emeritus Professor from the University's Space Research Centre highlighted the environmental, social and business applications of space technologies including applications currently being used in the East Midlands.

These applications will be exemplified at a special business-focussed event to be held this week (Thursday, 18th October) at the National Space Centre, Leicester. It aims to stimulate University-Business collaboration in developing new phone apps that use location-based data from satellites for every day user purposes.

Professor Wells was in Brussels to launch a new publication that provides insights into how Europe's Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) space programme is being used in new applications and services across Europe. The publication is produced jointly by the European Space Agency-ESA- and NEREUS, the Network of European Regions Using Space Technology. Professor Wells is a Vice-President of NEREUS and is a leading editor of the publication.

Speaking at the European Parliament, Professor Wells highlighted how satellite technologies - being used in Leicester to monitor traffic pollution - exemplified the practical application of space science.

He also described how businesses were benefiting from novel space technologies. The energy sector, for example, is turning to space to assist with managing wind farms and solar energy conversion.

Professor Wells told members and guests at the European Parliament: "Earth Observation data is being used to predict and monitor water conservation and water reserves in the lakes and mountain snow across Europe- supporting the EU water directive.

"Air pollution from traffic and industry and its effects on citizens' health is being monitored using GMES resources.

"Agriculture and forestry are important economic industries in many regions. Numerous papers show how GMES is helping to protect the forests and to improve crop yields and farming efficiency.

"Earth Observation data is being used to estimate insurance liabilities associated with crop damage arising from extreme weather events.

"Managing coastline erosion and water quality in estuaries and coastal waters is another important area."

Professor Wells also told over 150 people attending the presentation about the use of space science for crisis planning and management: "Crisis management using space covers many risks: supporting the rescue service responding to earthquakes and volcanoes; identifying risks to buildings and bridges from subsidence, oil spills, rapid response to forest fires."

Challenge: Intellectuals and Land-Change in Colorado [Search Research]

Challenge: Intellectuals and Land-Change in ColoradoDaniel Russell knows how to find the answers to questions you can't get to with a simple Google query. In his weekly Search Research column, Russell issues a search challenge, then follows up later in the week with his solution?using whatever search technology and methodology fits the bill.

I know this is hard to believe, but one of the most remarkable social movements of the late 19th century was a drive towards intellectualism.

Once upon a time in an age before films, digitally recorded music, and massive amount of content on the internet, people self-organized into groups to learn about history, science, music, religion, and art. They felt a need to learn about the world, even without the need for certificates and credentials. They just wanted to know more.

As a consequence, there was a mass education populist movement that began in New York during the latter part of the 1800s and was quickly picked up and franchised around the country.

Today's question is to figure out what the backstory is to this movement?what was it, where did it begin... AND to learn how much the organization changed the land around it. We'll look at one specific locale in the West to see what's happened.

1. Even after more than 100 years, one of these education franchises is still very active and very well-known in Colorado. What's it called and what city is it in? (For search fanatics, give us the lat/long.)

2. Can you find a current photo of the grounds of this institution AND a photo from a 1899? (We're going to ask for a highly reputable source for the image from more than 100 years ago.)

3. What's the most striking difference in the appearance of the land between now and 100 years ago? (For extra-extra credit, can you show both current and 1899 views side-by-side?)

Search on!

Wednesday search challenge (10/17/12): Intellectuals and land-change in Colorado? | SearchReSearch

Daniel M. Russell studies the way people search and research?an anthropologist of search, if you will. You can read more from Russell on his SearchReSearch blog, and stay tuned for his weekly challenges (and answers) here on Lifehacker.

Top Five Myths of Genetically Modified Seeds, Busted

Having just stepped into the shouting match over patents on genetically engineered crops, there are a few small things that I, too, would like to get off my chest.

I say small things. I'm not talking about today's big hot issues: Whether genetically modified organisms ? GMOs ? should be labeled, or cause cancer in rats, or might improve the lives of poor farmers in Africa; none of that.

This is about something simple: Seeds of GMOs. Various myths have grown up around these seeds. Like most myths, they are inspired by reality. But they've wandered off into the world of fiction.

Central Illinois corn and soybean farmer Gary Niemeyer readies his genetically modified seed corn for spring planting at his farm near Auburn, Ill.

Seth Perlman/AP i

Central Illinois corn and soybean farmer Gary Niemeyer readies his genetically modified seed corn for spring planting at his farm near Auburn, Ill.

Seth Perlman/AP

Myth 1: Seeds from GMOs are sterile.

No, they'll germinate and grow just like any other plant. This idea presumably has its roots in a real genetic modification (dubbed the Terminator Gene by anti-biotech activists) that can make a plant produce sterile seeds. Monsanto owns the patent on this technique, but has promised not to use it.

Now, biotech companies ? and Monsanto in particular ? do seem to wish that this idea were true. They do their best to keep farmers from replanting the offspring from GMOs. But they do this because, in fact, those seeds will multiply.

Myth 2: Monsanto will sue you for growing their patented GMOs if traces of those GMOs entered your fields through wind-blown pollen.

This is the idea that I see most often. A group of organic farmers, in fact, recently sued Monsanto, asserting that GMOs might contaminate their crops and then Monsanto might accuse them of patent infringement. The farmers couldn't cite a single instance in which this had happened, though, and the judge dismissed the case.

The idea, however, is inspired by a real-world event. Back in 1999, Monsanto sued a Canadian canola farmer, Percy Schmeiser, for growing the company's Roundup-tolerant canola without paying any royalty or "technology fee." Schmeiser had never bought seeds from Monsanto, so those canola plants clearly came from somewhere else. But where?

Canola pollen can move for miles, carried by insects or the wind. Schmeiser testified that this must have been the cause, or GMO canola might have blown into his field from a passing truck. Monsanto said that this was implausible, because their tests showed that about 95 percent of Schmeiser's canola contained Monsanto's Roundup resistance gene, and it's impossible to get such high levels through stray pollen or scattered seeds. However, there's lots of confusion about these tests. Other samples, tested by other people, showed lower concentrations of Roundup resistance ? but still over 50 percent of the crop.

Schmeiser had an explanation. As an experiment, he'd actually sprayed Roundup on about three acres of the field that was closest to a neighbor's Roundup Ready canola. Many plants survived the spraying, showing that they contained Monsanto's resistance gene ? and when Schmeiser's hired hand harvested the field, months later, he kept seed from that part of the field and used it for planting the next year.

This convinced the judge that Schmeiser intentionally planted Roundup Ready canola. Schmeiser appealed. The Canadian Supreme Court ruled that Schmeiser had violated Monsanto's patent, but had obtained no benefit by doing so, so he didn't owe Monsanto any money. (For more details on all this, you can read the judge's decision. Schmeiser's site contains other documents.)

So why is this a myth? It's certainly true that Monsanto has been going after farmers whom the company suspects of using GMO seeds without paying royalties. And there are plenty of cases ? including Schmeiser's ? in which the company has overreached, engaged in raw intimidation, and made accusations that turned out not to be backed up by evidence.

But as far as I can tell, Monsanto has never sued anybody over trace amounts of GMOs that were introduced into fields simply through cross-pollination. (The company asserts, in fact, that it will pay to remove any of its GMOs from fields where they don't belong.) If you know of any case where this actually happened, please let me know.

Myth 3: Any contamination with GMOs makes organic food non-organic.

The organic rules prohibit the "use" of genetic modification in organic agriculture. But if pollen blows from genetically modified corn into your organic cornfield and pollinates a few kernels, you aren't "using" it ? at least according to the USDA's interpretation of those rules. In fact, a lot of the organic corn that's fed to organically raised chickens or pigs, does contain some level of GMOs.

That said, organic producers typically do try to minimize the presence of GMOs, because their customers don't want them. It's usually not too hard to keep contamination to a very low level. But there are crops ? specifically canola and corn ? in which it's extremely difficult to eliminate it entirely.

Myth 4: Before Monsanto got in the way, farmers typically saved their seeds and re-used them.

By the time Monsanto got into the seed business, most farmers in the U.S. and Europe were already relying on seed that they bought every year from older seed companies. This is especially true of corn farmers, who've been growing almost exclusively commercial hybrids for more than half a century. (If you re-plant seeds from hybrids, you get a mixture of inferior varieties.) But even soybean and cotton farmers who don't grow hybrids were moving in that direction.

This shift started with the rise of commercial seed companies, not the advent of genetic engineering. But Monsanto and GMOs certainly accelerated the trend drastically.

Myth 5: Most seeds these days are genetically modified.

Actually, surprisingly few are. Here's the full list of food crops for which you can find GMO varieties: Corn, soybeans, cotton (for oil), canola (also a source of oil), squash, and papaya. You could also include sugar beets, which aren't eaten directly, but refined into sugar. There's also GMO alfalfa, but that goes to feed animals, not for sprouts that people eat. That leaves quite a lot of your garden untouched.

GMO versions of tomatoes, potatoes, and rice have been created and approved by government regulators, but they aren't commercially available.

(AP) ? Myanmar has signed a deal with a British aviation enthusiast to allow the excavation of a World War II treasure: dozens of Spitfire fighter planes buried by the British almost 70 years ago.

Aviation enthusiast David J. Cundall discovered the locations of the aircraft after years of searching. The planes are believed to be in good condition, since they were reportedly packed in crates and hidden by British forces to keep them out of the hands of invading Japanese.

The British Embassy said Wednesday that the agreement was reached after discussions between President Thein Sein and British Prime Minister David Cameron during his visit to Myanmar earlier this year.

The excavation of the rare planes is slated to begin by the end of October.

The Myanma Ahlin daily reported that the excavation agreement was signed Tuesday by Director General of Civil Aviation Tin Naing Tun, Cundall on behalf of his British company DJC, and Htoo Htoo, managing director of Cundall's Myanmar partner, the Shwe Taung Paw company.

"It took 16 years for Mr. David Cundall to locate the planes buried in crates. We estimate that there are at least 60 Spitfires buried and they are in good condition," Htoo Htoo Zaw said.

"This will be the largest number of Spitfires in the world," he said. "We want to let people see those historic fighters, and the excavation of these fighter planes will further strengthen relations between Myanmar and Britain."

The British Embassy described the agreement as a chance to work with Myanmar's new reformist government "in uncovering, restoring, displaying these fighter planes."

"We hope that many of them will be gracing the skies of Britain and as discussed, some will be displayed here in Burma," said an embassy spokesman, using the old name for Myanmar.

Myanmar has since last the past year turned away from many of the repressive policies of the previous military government and patched up relations with Western nations that had previously shunned it.

Myanma Ahlin cited Transport Minister Nyan Tun Aung saying the agreement was a milestone strengthening the friendly relationship between Myanmar and Britain and amounts to the British government's recognition of the democratic reforms of President Thein Sein's new government.

Cundall has said his quest to find the planes involved 12 trips to Myanmar and the expenditure of more than 130,000 pounds ($210,000).

From river cruises to cuisine cruises to the more familiar Caribbean cruise, there?s no shortage of floating vacations to choose from. But whether you opt for spirited adventure on the high seas or restful and tranquil sailing, remember to protect your trip from things that go bump in the night with travel insurance.

?Statistically, cruises are considered one of the safest forms of travel, but oftentimes things can and do go wrong,? says Jim Grace, President and CEO of InsureMyTrip. ?For protection against the unexpected, travel insurance is truly a traveler?s best friend.? Just like cruises and friends however, there are different kinds of insurance and choosing which one is right for you can be daunting. To clear up some of the mystery, InsureMyTrip investigated the top five travel insurance myths and compiled a list of best practices for protecting all your nautical vacations:

1. I Don?t Need It, Nothing Will Go Wrong: Though we hope never to use or need it, travel insurance can provide a tremendous amount of security and peace of mind for a small fraction of the cost of your trip. Travel insurance provides coverage for a wide-range of travel risks including:

  • Trip cancellation (if you have to cancel)
  • Trip interruption (if your travels are brought to an unexpected end while on your trip)
  • Medical coverage (if you need emergency medical coverage or an augmentation of your current health benefits)
  • Medical evacuation protection (air ambulance service)

2. All Insurance Plans Are the Same: There are hundreds of insurance policies to choose from and just like snowflakes, no two are exactly alike. The key is to compare, compare, compare. Shop around to get the best plan for your needs at the right price. InsureMyTrip.com offers side-by-side comparisons of policies and prices to help you make smart purchasing decisions quickly and easily.

3. There?s No Best Time to Buy Insurance: The early bird isn?t the only one rewarded for his timely action. To receive the most benefit from your travel insurance policy and be eligible for optional benefits like Cancel For Any Reason and Pre-Existing Medical Conditions, purchase your policy within 10 to 30 days of your First Trip Payment.

4. I Get All the Protection I Need with Insurance from the Cruise Line: Insurance from a third-party source is easy to buy but more importantly, it offers 1) greater choice of plans, 2) enhanced protection coverage, including Financial Default protection and Missed Connection benefits and 3) better reimbursement benefits that provide financial reimbursement for canceled trips rather than a cruise voucher or credit.

5. All of My Medical Needs Can Be Managed Onboard: It?s true that all cruise ships have fully equipped medical facilities and staff onboard to handle most emergencies, still, medical evacuations ?transporting a passenger from the ship to a hospital on shore? occurs more often than we realize. The cost of a typical evacuation to the nearest, but not necessarily quality-care hospital, can quickly exceed the limited coverage offered by most cruise lines and leave you with a hefty balance to pay. Medical evacuation policies offering up to $2 million coverage can be purchased from InsureMyTrip as a stand alone policy or a benefit included in comprehensive travel policies. It provides evacuation to the nearest appropriate care facility or, in some cases, to your hospital of choice depending on the company and plan.

To learn more about the protection plans that best suit your cruise travel needs, visit www.insuremytrip.com online or call (800) 487-4722 to speak with a licensed travel insurance professional. Whether you simply need one question answered or want step-by-step assistance selecting a travel insurance policy, InsureMyTrip?s expert Customer Care representatives are available to help seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Substance abuse policies: legal guidelines - Business Management ...

businessman drinking beerSubstance abuse in the workplace costs employers billions of dollars annually in lost productivity, absenteeism, and theft, to say nothing of Workers' Compensation, health insurance, and medical costs.

Creating a workable substance abuse policy is complicated by: the fact that states vary as to what they allow in the way of testing; the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which affects how drug and alcohol addiction can be confronted; and legal proscriptions for acting on suspicions of actual workplace illegal drug and alcohol use.

1. Is it legal under the ADA to terminate an employee who is currently using illegal drugs?

Yes. Individuals who currently engage in the illegal use of drugs are specifically excluded from the definition of a "qualified individual with a disability" protected by the ADA when an action is taken on the basis of their drug use.

2. Is testing for illegal drugs permissible under th...(register to read more)

Commitment Questions is a book that gives you questions to use as tools to
get to know a potential partner by asking fun questions and there are also
key questions to ask a person to get to know them better no matter what
stage of the relationship you are in.

?

?

?

?

Today I am intervieweing Peter, to get his perspective on the book.

?

1 ) Peter, What do you think about the book " Commitment Questions?"

It's nice to have help in how to get along, like that. We grow up with love songs in pop music that give us unrealistic expectations (that love is "magic"), and then as we grow up our culture mostly just seems to show us examples of rude behavior - as if being rude and domineering is cool. It's not.

2 ) Do you think the LGBT Community could benefit from this book?

Yes. People are people. Getting along is getting along. Love is love. Respect, understanding and communication work for everybody with a pulse. The basic things people fight about, and love each other for, and stupidly screw up on, are really all the same in the end for anybody.

The book has many questions for every stage of a relationship.

Here are some more sample questions:

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

3)? Peter, Do you think people should ask the questions they really don't want to know the answers to ?

Yes, but if they REALLY don't want to know the answer then you can't just force it on them at a bad time. People need to talk and think about painful (or just awkward) things at the right time and place where they feel respected, or just feel in the mood to reflect. The nice thing about a book asking you questions is you can pick it up when you are in the mood to be open to it. A book never "puts you on the spot".

4) If you are asked a difficult question about yourself that you think is to prying, what is a polite way of refusing to answer a question?

Depends on who asks it and if you think they are being nasty to you or not. Dismissing it with a silly comment, to make a joke of it, can work very nice. Or silence (sometimes adding a brief "withering glare" if necessary) can work at the right time and place. Or just tell them you don't want to talk about it, if they push it. Nobody can make you talk about what you don't want to. It takes two to talk. If it's really important it can always be brought up again later.

5) What is the most outrageous question you have ever been asked ?

"Who's on top". Once I was in a room full of mixed company at a dinner party and I was the only gay person (that I knew of). I just replied, "We roll around far too much to be able to tell" and it got a laugh.

Mother arrested at youth football game

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Louisville mother?was arrested and taken away in handcuffs following her son's football game. Witnesses said a corrections officer used excessive force when he arrested?the mother at a youth football field and it was caught on tape.

It happened Saturday morning at Valley High School. Kids from Valley and Fairdale youth league were finishing a game of football.

"This was just so horrible.?Seven to 8-year-olds were standing around crying and screaming," said witness Laurie Kustes.

Kustes and Cynthia Allen are parents of youth league football players. Allen said the game was wrapping up and an off-duty Metro Corrections officer working security told the crowd to clear the track for the homecoming parade.

"Our parents weren't clearing the track fast enough so one of our parents were attacked," said Allen.

The woman on the ground was Mindy Hernandez, 33.

"Slammed into the bleachers, slammed into the track on her face," said Allen.

Hernandez was arrested by?the off-duty corrections officer and booked on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Her son Josiah was next to her when it happened.

"We were trying to get off the field and my mom was trying to hurry up to take me to one of her friends home coming and the police arrest her cause said F-U," said Josiah Hernandez.

Josiah Hernandez's?father, Carlos Hernandez, was also nearby and was worried about his son.

"When he said back up I'm leaving, he jumped and has Josiah like that, jumped on top and pushed him to the bleachers," said Carlos Hernandez.

Josiah Hernandez?was only worried about his mother.

'He just slammed her to the ground," said Josiah Hernandez. "I cried really really bad, I wanted it to stop but, I kept crying."

Witnesses said despite what Mindy Hernandez may have said to the corrections officer, it was not justified to come to this.

"She wasn't being disorderly, all she was doing was trying to get her son," said Allen.

WAVE 3 spoke to a corrections officer on the scene who declined to comment. A youth league director asked our photographer to leave the field and did not comment either. WAVE 3 did talk with Corrections Director Mark Bolton, he confirmed the officer was working an off duty job. Bolton said he has not read the reports or spoken to the officer, but is being told the officer gave verbal directives to the woman several times and when she resisted, she was arrested.

On death, Bill Keller at the NYT gets it wrong again - Maggie's Farm

Keller seems to have written his glowing essay about the Liverpool Protocol, How to Die/>, without talking to any practicing American doctors. He?is writing as?an advocate of Obamacare, and speaks as if American doctors won't let people die?while the English people will.

If he had spoken with American doctors, he would know that most American internists do something very?similar with patients whose condition is hopeless, and do so routinely. Daily. Everybody dies. American hospitals have plenty of patients with "DNR" (Do Not Resusitate) orders on their charts, and hospice units and hospice centers are common in the US.

I see two?exceptions. One is when the family?or patient?is adamant?about "Do anything and everything." These tend to be people who don't know much.?The second is with some?terminal cancer patients. I have seen terminal cancer patients, with widespead metastatic disease in the ICU, dying while the latest cancer chemotherapy is still?being pumped into their veins. It's pitiful.

Generally, doctors know when to give up and do not view death as?an enemy. Unfortunately, Bill Keller seems to be addressing a straw man.

Keller should read this: Why Doctors Die Differently - Careers in medicine have taught them the limits of treatment and the need to plan for the end. Doctors know when they're a goner, and when their patients are too. Most docs do not offer false hope.

Finding A Charleston Injury lawyer | Reference and Education

Providing zealous representation to all of its clients should be the number one mission of a law firm that is dedicated to client satisfaction whatever that may take. The goals of a great injury law firm are many but a few very important fundamental principles are: Taking pride in very effective and cost effective legal solutions for each client they work with. They should know that in order to provide sound legal strategy, they must fully understand the nature of the clients needs. If they do this the right way, they will build a long term relationship that will last a long time.

Regardless of the practice area, every matter brought to an attorney requires a certain knowledge base, experience, and strategy. With a broad range of targeted services and dedication to the legal profession, the goal is to provide the highest quality of legal services through written word, oral argumentation, or other avenues of representation. A firm worth its salt will make every reasonable attempt to resolve your legal issues through negotiation and other litigation alternatives. However, they must realize that this is not possible in every case, and in these situations, they need to be prepared to zealously litigate your case before a judge and jury.

An experienced personal injury lawyer is there to provide exceptional representation to the injured people that hire them. If you have been injured, you do not want to attempt to negotiate or handle it on your own under any circumstances. If you do, there is a chance you will miss out on many of the damages that you are entitled to and maybe recover nothing at all. Covered under the law you are entitled to past and future medical bills, lost wages, your pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, mental stress, and permanent impairments. In order to ensure that all your potential injuries and damages are discovered before settlement discussions begin or your case is tried, let an experienced injury lawyer help you from the beginning.

Whether you were in a car accident or just slipped while walking down the street, your lawyer needs to assist and guide you as a relentless advocate while maintaining the requisite compassion to your unique situation. When you are looking for solid representation, most lawyers today offer a free consultation, so, take them up on it and talk with a few. You can't know who is the best until you talk to a few lawyers about your case.

To absolutely make sure you have selected the right lawyer, interview 3-4 of them. The good law firms will welcome you to a free consultation, so, meet with them, ask questions, and pick the best. Then and only then will you begin to feel better about whatever legal challenge you are facing today. Once you have retained the law firm to help, you are finally headed in the right direction in this legal matter.

Pros And Cons Of Fiberglass Paddle Boards And Bamboo Sup Boards

Are you confused about evaluating fiberglass paddle boards and bamboo SUP boards? The following information will help you understand the pros and cons of these types of boards.
Pros of fiberglass boards

Fiberglass SUP boards are durable. They can withstand the pressure from high-velocity waves. Fiberglass is a highly durable material.

Fiberglass is light and durable. The lightweight structure of fiberglass SUP boards helps you navigate any kind of tide. You can also carry these boards around. Remember to choose a fiberglass SUP board that is appropriate for your height and weight.

Cons of fiberglass boards

Fiberglass paddle boards are not environment friendly. They are also more expensive than bamboo SUP boards.

These types of boards may develop dents or dings. You must cover the board with a special enclosure to protect it from chipping. You cant afford to let a chip, ding, dent or a crack linger.

Strong sunlight is understood to have a negative impact on fiberglass. It takes away the sheen from the board. It also weakens the molecular structure of fiberglass. So you should always place your fiberglass SUP board in the shade.

Pros of bamboo standup paddle boards

Bamboo SUP boards are lightweight and durable similar to fiberglass paddle boards. They are inexpensive when compared to fiberglass SUP boards. Bamboo is a fast growing grass. It is easy to procure bamboo as a raw material.

Bamboo is an all-weather material. It can withstand rain, sunshine, and cold weather. So you need not worry about your bamboo paddle board disintegrating due to environmental factors.

If you are an environmentally conscious person, then buying a bamboo paddle board is an ideal thing to do. Bamboo can be safely recycled and does not release harmful chemicals. Furthermore, it is a sustainable material that is readily available and perfectly suited for SUP manufacture.

Bamboo SUP boards, if manufactured properly can be harder than some of the hardest woods. A bamboo paddle board can be made to be ten times stronger than fiberglass paddle boards.

Cons of bamboo boards

There are no real disadvantages of bamboo paddle boards.

Conclusion

Whatever type of board you choose, it is important to buy it from a good SUP board manufacturer such as Elixir Board Co. (www.elixirboardco.com). A problem shared is a problem halved

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? The experience of being bullied is particularly detrimental to the psychological health of school girls who don't have social support from either adults or peers, according to a new study by Dr. Martin Guhn and colleagues from the University of British Columbia in Canada. In contrast, social support from adults or peers (or both) appears to lessen the negative consequences of bullying in this group, namely anxiety and depression.

The work is published online in Springer's Journal of Happiness Studies.

Guhn and his team looked at whether the combination of high levels of bullying and low levels of adult as well as peer support have a multiplicative negative effect on children's well-being.

A total of 3,026 ten-year-old school children from 72 schools in Vancouver, Canada, took part in the study and completed questionnaires, which assessed their satisfaction with life, their self-esteem, and their levels of anxiety and depression. The authors looked at whether the ratings for these factors differed, according to the quality of the children's relationships with both adults and their peers and how often they felt victimized.

Overall, girls were more likely to report positive relationships with both adults and peers, higher satisfaction with life, higher self-esteem as well as higher anxiety levels. There were no differences between boys' and girls' reported levels of bullying and depression. However, as many as 1 in 7 girls and 1 in 6 boys felt victimized several times a week, with verbal and social victimization more commonly reported than physical bullying; cyber bullying appeared to be relatively low.

The authors also found that positive relationships with adults and peers were strongly linked to life satisfaction and self-esteem, whereas bullying was strongly linked to depressive symptoms and anxiety. In addition, victimization was particularly strongly linked to low life satisfaction, low self-esteem and more depressive symptoms in girls who reported low levels of social support from adults as well as from peers.

The authors conclude: "Our findings have implications for promoting children's well-being in school and community contexts, supporting interventions that foster relationship-building skills and simultaneously reduce victimization. In other words, children need more than the absence of risk factors to experience good mental health and well-being."
