Host a Water Polo Game and Participate in Swim for MS! Get involved and dive into action to volunteer and help others.
Swim for MS is a great way to incorporate your interest of swimming with your desire to help the MS community. Anyone who has access to a pool can volunteer and you can plan to volunteer around your business, school and family commitments.
Swim for MS can be a backyard pool party, pool volleyball, cannonballs, laps, or a goal to swim a certain distance. There is no limit!
Water Polo:
1) Be sure to have a team of six field players and one goalkeeper. In addition, you may want to have 2-4 players as substitutes and 2 referees. 2) Clearly distinguish between teams by wearing colored swim caps. 3)The game is divided into four periods - each 5-8 minutes long. The game clock is stopped when the ball is not 'in play'. 4)The winner of the game is the team that scores the most goals. Game play involves swimming, treading water, players passing the ball while being defended by opponents, and scoring by throwing the ball into a net defended by a goalie.
Rules: 1) A team may not have possession of the ball for longer than 30 seconds without shooting for the goal unless an opponent commits an ejection foul. After 30 seconds, possession passes to the other team. However, if a team shoots the ball within the allotted time, and regains control of the ball, the shot clock is reset to 30 seconds. 2) Each team may call 2 one-minute timeouts in the four periods of regulation play, and one timeout if the game goes into overtime. During game play, only the team in possession of the ball may call a timeout. 3) The goals are 3 meters wide and 90 centimeters high. Water polo balls are generally yellow and of varying size and weight for juniors, women and men. The middle of the pool is designated by a white line. 4) Players are not permitted to push the ball underwater in order to keep it from an opponent, or push or hold an opposing player unless that player is holding the ball. 5) After each goal is scored, play is re-started at mid-pool; the goalkeepers are not permitted to go across the mid-pool line. 6) A goal counts only when the ball goes completely across the goal line and into the goal (close does not count); the ball is out of bounds if it goes completely across the goal line and not into the goal. 7) No offensive player is allowed to swim inside of the 2-meter line unless he/she has possession of the ball.
REGISTER TODAY as a "Team" at SwimForMS.org and create your team fundraising page. Once you register, each participant will receive a Swim for MS t-shirt, towel, and 20 wristbands!

A new YouTube video sets out to answer the classic question: Do you prefer dogs or cats? But rather than feature the furry rivals in an animalistic showdown, the video has humans starring as our favorite pets. There?s "dog-friend" and "cat-friend" ? both of whom live with a nameless Average Joe, our human (acting as a human). Much like their real-life counterparts, the two pet-friends live up to their respective stereotypes. Dog-friend greets Average Joe with hysterical excitement, and constantly lavishes him with attention. Cat-friend, on the other hand, basically glowers and ignores Average Joe throughout the entire two-and-a-half-minute video. Since going online last week, "… Continue reading? More About: cats, dogs

Niarchos Foundation grant will fund planning by a multidisciplinary group of scholars at Johns Hopkins University for an ethical framework to address food shortages and maldistribution
Fair access to good food is a challenge as old as civilization, and failing to meet it contributed to the fall of the French monarchy ('let them eat cake'), Babylon, Athens and the Roman Empire. As the global populace climbs toward an expected nine billion by 2050, an $800,000 grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation will fund collaborative work by three divisions of Johns Hopkins University to develop ethical guidelines to help meet the challenge in our day.
"There is something profoundly wrong about a world in which nearly two billion people are undernourished while another two billion people are overweight," says Ruth Faden, PhD, MPH, director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, who, along with Alan Goldberg, PhD, from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Robert Thompson, PhD, of Johns Hopkins' Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, will lead the project. "This collaboration among Johns Hopkins institutions will examine one of the fundamental obstacles to achieving global food security: profound disagreement about what it means to feed the world ethically," Faden says.
The project leaders will recruit diverse experts and stakeholders from around the world to characterize differences in ethical assumptions and aims, and to search for moral common ground, Faden says. Participants will include those involved in high and low yield farming, agricultural technology and the welfare of animals, the environment and workers.
"We expect that there will be negotiation and conflict among competing interests, but all the players need to be at the table," says Thompson. A working, weeklong conference is planned for 2014.
"The goal of this meeting is to produce a document of shared moral principles or commitments that will provide the understanding of the basic issues that must be included to identify fair or ethical food guidelines," says Goldberg.
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation funds diverse non-profit organizations and projects around the world that have the potential for broad, lasting and positive social impact, according to the foundation. In the 1930s, Niarchos expanded his family's grain business by thinking globally, buying the ships that transported wheat.
"Mark Twain wrote that hunger is the handmaid of genius; I do believe that if we bring committed people together and treat these issues with the gravity they deserve, we will find a way to narrow what are now broad differences of opinion on a profoundly important question: how to feed everyone, ethically. It is doable," Faden says.

Just in time for Christmas, a retiring Minnesota grocery store owner is giving his roughly 400 employees quite a gift ? ownership of his three stores.
Instead of accepting any of the multiple offers he received from large national chains to purchase his stores, Joe Lueken, 70, will transfer ownership of his two Lueken?s Village Foods in Bemidji, Minn., and another one in Wahpeton, N.D., to his employees as part of an employee stock ownership plan (ESOP). The transfer of ownership from the Lueken family to the employees will begin on Jan. 1, and will not cost the employees any money.
The amount of shares each employee receives will be based on length of service and salary. The program is expected to pay the Lueken family off for the sale in three to five years, according to a report by the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
?My employees are largely responsible for any success I've had, and they deserve to get some of the benefits of that," Lueken told the Star Tribune. "You can't always take. You also have to give back."
Story: NFL cheerleaders shave heads to support coach
After being informed by his two sons that they were not interested in taking over the business, Lueken and his family came up with the employee stock ownership plan to transfer ownership.
"We could have hired a gunslinger from Minneapolis, but that didn't sit well because the reward wouldn't go to the proper people," Lueken's son Jeff told the Star Tribune.
After 46 years in the business, Lueken, who has Parkinson's disease, is retiring to travel the world with his wife. Lueken announced last week that Brent Sicard, who started in a janitor job at Lueken?s in 1998 and worked his way up to a top management position, will take over as the company?s president and chief executive officer.
Lueken has acted like a regular guy even as his business grew, driving vans for the company and hanging out in the break room with the other employees over the years, according to the Star Tribune.
Video: Girl sends thousands of letters to soldiers overseas
"Joe would arrive at 3:30 every morning," Sicard told the newspaper. "No one could outstock Joe. No one could outwalk Joe. No one can outthink Joe. He can walk through a $2 million warehouse and tell you within a few thousand dollars how much is in there."
Lueken has also been giving to charitable causes for years, helping the Bemidji State University Foundation give scholarships to students in need.
Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn swung and missed on his first two coaching hires, Dan Hawkins and Jon Embree. So it?s no surprise that the first name to surface as a candidate to become Colorado?s next coach is a proven winner hungry to get back into coaching: Mark Mangino.
Bohn, a 1983 graduate of Kansas University, where he played football and baseball, knows how tough it is to build a winning football program at KU. Bohn knows his KU history well enough to know that Mangino was the first football coach to leave Kansas with a winning record since Jack Mitchell.
Colorado is in the midst of seven consecutive losing seasons. Mangino inherited a Kansas program coming off six consecutive losing seasons.
If Bohn is allowed to make the hire, nobody should be surprised if he picks Mangino.
Living in Naples, Fla., Mangino?s interest in returning to the sidelines was put on hold last season while wife Mary Jane battled breast cancer. Friends are happy to report Mary Jane is doing well and has completed treatment.
?She?s given me a directive: Go find a coaching job,? Mangino told the Oklahoman in an October interview. ?So we?ll see what happens. I don?t know where it will be. Could be anywhere.?
Could be Colorado.
If Mangino lands the job, he could become quarterback Jordan Webb?s first and fourth coach. Webb redshirted one season under Mangino at Kansas, played two for Turner Gill at KU and one for Embree at CU.
Mangino?s former assistants thriving
Dave Doeren left Mangino?s staff for Wisconsin, where he worked his way up to defensive coordinator. Doeren?s in his second season as head coach at Northern Illinois, where his team is 11-1 and ranked 19th in the nation. He has a two-year record of 22-4 (1-1 vs. KU) and is in line for a BCS conference job. His name has been mentioned in speculation for the Purdue job.
Doeren?s recruiting coups at Kansas included James Holt, Kevin Kane, James McClinton, Joe Mortensen, Mike Rivera, Darrell Stuckey and Aqib Talib.
Former KU defensive coordinator Bill Young left Mangino?s staff for Miami, where he spent one year and has been at Oklahoma State since then.
Ed Warinner, offensive coordinator for Mangino, left his job as Notre Dame?s offensive line coach to join Urban Meyer?s Ohio State staff as co-offensive coordinator/O-line coach.
Ineligible for the postseason, the Buckeyes went 12-0. He?s ready for a big head-coaching job.
John Reagan is offensive coordinator for the Rice squad that upset Kansas in Memorial Stadium in September.
David Beaty knows better than just about anybody the value of Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel?s Heisman Trophy worthiness. Beaty is the Aggies? wide receivers coach. Brandon Blaney is a defensive assistant coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Bill Miller is assistant head coach/linebackers coach at Minnesota. Je?Ney Jackson is strength and conditioning coach for Tom Crean?s top-ranked Indiana basketball team.
Louie Matsakis handles special teams and running backs and is recruiting coordinator at Youngstown State, where Tom Sims is assistant head coach/defensive line.
Chris Dawson has been Kansas State?s strength and conditioning coach since getting fired with Mangino. Dawson reportedly accepted an offer from Washington State?s Mike Leach shortly after his hiring, but quickly changed his mind and decided to stay with Bill Snyder.
Tommy Mangino is Hutchinson Community College?s offensive coordinator. He apparently inherited his father?s fiery personality and was ejected late in an early season game Hutch won, 49-12.

The Season Pass will be a great way to acquire all four Map Packs at a discount, but if our fans would rather take it one Map Pack at a time, then we?ll offer each pack ? la carte for anyone who wants it. TIP! A good tip when it comes to personal bankruptcy is to reconsider having a divorce, if you are finding yourself constantly in a hard financial situation. It is not uncommon for individuals to seek a divorce only to immediately file for bankruptcy due to unforeseen financial difficulty.
Those who face personal bankruptcy sometimes feel negative emotions, like anger. Those who find the need to file often worry about how they will be able to pay debts and live their daily life. As the following article explains, options do exist for those facing financial difficulty.
TIP! An understanding of your rights is important before filing for bankruptcy. Do not take debt collectors at their word when they tell you that a specific debt can?t be discharged through bankruptcy.
In the event your bankruptcy case gets dismissed due to your own error, it is possible to re-file. However, be aware that the normal stay after a dismissal is 30 days after filing. You can avoid these errors by verifying all your information before it is submitted to the court.
TIP! You must be entirely candid when it comes to declaring assets and obligations in your bankruptcy petition. It is necessary to be open regarding both the positive and negative aspects of your financial life.
Make time to visit with family and friends during the bankruptcy process. The process of bankruptcy can seem brutal. This long and stressful process can leave a person feeling guilt ridden, unworthy and ashamed. There are a number of people who wish to go into seclusion while undergoing the process of personal bankruptcy. However, self imposed isolation will only make you feel even worse about the process and could even lead to depression. Therefore, it is important that you continue to spend quality time with your loved ones despite, in spite of your current financial situation.
TIP! Filing for bankruptcy does not mean that you lose all of your assets. Personal property is exempt from bankruptcy claims.
Creditor conversations are common when you are moving towards a bankruptcy. Get all agreements in writing when you come to terms with a creditor. If your creditors are willing to be flexible, this can make your bankruptcy go more smoothly, so make sure you have a paper trail.
TIP! An experienced bankruptcy attorney can guide you through the process successfully. Rest assured, however, that you can find an ample selection of qualified attorneys.
Make sure that your debts are eligible to be cleared before you file for bankruptcy. Student loans and a few other things though, will not be forgiven. If your debt is primarily made up of these types of debt, loan consolidation may be a better option than bankruptcy.
TIP! If possible obtain a personal recommendation for a bankruptcy lawyer instead of randomly choosing one. Don?t be taken in by some fly-by-night company that exists only to profit from the suffering of others.
Make sure that you have no other options besides bankruptcy, because it can affect your credit negatively. You may be able to arrange less onerous payment plans or reduce the total amount of debt you owe by working with your creditors. This could be a good way to avoid bankruptcy and protect your credit score. You might also consider consolidating all your debts into one loan.
TIP! Don?t take large cash advances from credit cards prior to filing since the debts will be eliminated from these cards. Doing so constitutes fraud.
Always research your situation and options before you move forward with filing a bankruptcy. Analyze your situation when it comes to debt as you determine which type of debt can be easily discharged under bankruptcy. Some debts, especially credit card purchases made in the 90 days before the filing that do not include essential purchases, may not be included in the bankruptcy. Bankruptcy laws may vary from state to state, so be sure that the laws you study are the ones that are applicable to you and your state.
TIP! As bankruptcy appears on the horizon, don?t take your savings or retirement accounts to try to pay off all your bills. Don?t touch retirement accounts unless you don?t have a choice.
To rebuild your credit after filing for bankruptcy, try opening new credit lines. When you have bad credit this can be hard, but there are options available to you like secured credit cards. If you get a regular, unsecured card, you may end up paying astronomical interest rates. You will be better able to obtain loans and other forms of credit if you actively rebuild your credit and keep it in good standing.
TIP! Try applying for a new line of credit or credit card to start building up your credit history after a bankruptcy. You may not have unsecured credit options; however, secured cards can be a workable plan.
If you are about to file for bankruptcy, then make sure you hire a lawyer. Bankruptcy can be highly confusing and stressful, and you need an unbiased partner who can help simplify the process. A bankruptcy attorney can help yo,u and make certain you can do things the right way.
TIP! If you are concerned about keeping your car, check with your attorney about lowering the monthly payment. In many cases, Chapter 7 bankruptcy can lower your payments.
With any luck, this piece has shown you that financial roadblocks are not necessarily the end of the world. It can be daunting, but you can do it. Remember these tips so you can dig your way out of debt

I was surfing through the BiggerPockets forums today and I stumbled across one discussion regarding wholesalers. ?In a nutshell, the discussion was about a flipper being brought a deal from a wholesaler where the wholesaler greatly exaggerated the key numbers (ARV and rehab cost). Not a rare encounter to read about, but it reminded me of an encounter (or should I say ?multiple encounters??) I had with a real estate wholesaler.
Unless you want to tarnish your reputation as a wholesaler, DO NOT follow this strategy. Whether or not it was done on purpose or out of?being a rookie/naive, it doesn?t matter, because both ways create the same perception: being shady.
A Real World Scenario
As I would encourage all real estate investors to do, particularly flippers/buy-and-hold investors, I believe it is a good idea to get yourself on as many buyer?s lists as you can. Whether I?m surfing Craigslist or calling ?We Buy Houes? signs, I?m always looking to get myself on buyer?s lists. It?s basic math ? the more lists I?m on, the higher the probability that I can land myself a deal.
One thing I didn?t expect was that it would expose some real?bizarre?and not well thought out business strategies. Here?s a look at several emails that show just what I?m talking about.
EMail #1
An email showed up in my inbox where the wholesaler was offering a deal for $7,500 (give or take a few hundred, I don?t remember the exact numbers as it was awhile ago). I looked through a couple pictures (note to wholesalers ? the more pictures the better!!!), and I thought there may be some profit to be had. I called up a real estate buddy and asked his thoughts (he has much more experience than me), and he told me he had checked out the property months ago and it was a disaster ? not only from a rehab perspective, but it had code violations on it from the city. The straw that broke the camel?s back . . . it wasn?t in the best part of town either.
At $7,500 it MAY have still allowed for a profit to be made; however, way too many risks to justify MAYBE getting a reward.
EMail #2
A few days go by and an email shows up from the same wholesaler. The same property is now available for $6,000. Nothing shady here. He wasn?t getting any bites at his previous price, so he lowered it. Can?t fault anyone here.
EMail #3
An email shows up a couple days later regarding the same property; however, there are two differences. First, it is from a different wholesaler. Second, it is listed at $10,000.
Ummmmm??? I don?t know this for a fact, but my logical conclusion is, Wholesaler A networks with Wholesaler B who says they will try to sell it at $10,000 so that it is a ?win-win? for the two of them (they both make the profits they want).
A friendly hint: DO NOT do this if you care about your reputation.
EMail #4
You may think I?m making this up, but this is truly how things unfolded. A week goes by, and I get another email regarding the property. We now have Wholesaler C sending out the property, and now it is listed for $15,000!!!
Who knows how this transpired, but I?m sure you are reading this thinking the same way I was: shady!
Another friendly hint: DO NOT do this if you care about your reputation
Lessons to Be Learned
There are a couple lessons to be learned for both wholesalers and other investors, although, hopefully the lesson is abundantly obvious.
Wholesalers
If you don?t want to appear as a shady character, don?t take another wholesaler?s listing and bump up the price. ESPECIALLY, if all you are going to do is email it to your buyer?s list and re-market it. There is nothing wrong with sending it to your list, but the obvious problem comes in by raising the price on what the market has already said is an overpriced piece of property.
Not only does it A) not make any sense, but even worse, B) it makes you look bad!
A solution? Tell the original wholesaler you will send it out at the same price, but it will just need to be a case of him making a bit less on the spread since he will need to split it with you. Sure, you both may not make as much, but you will be gaining/building something that is priceless ? a solid reputation among your buyer?s list.
Flippers & Buy-and-Holders
Be extra careful out there. Make sure you are not paying an over inflated price that has been marked up, and then marked up, and who knows, maybe marked up again. I suppose it could be argued that it doesn?t matter how much it is marked up if, at the end of the day, it is still a smokin? hot deal for the end buyer, but I?m a cheapskate, so I want things as cheap as I can get them!
My solution? Like I noted, get on as many buyer?s lists as you can.
To wrap up my story, out of curiosity, I emailed the original wholesaler after seeing the $15,000 price tag from Wholesaler C. I asked Wholesaler A if the property was still available at $6,000? Their answer, ?Yes, it is. Do you want to meet me there to check it out??
Funny and sad all at the same time.

Lost in the hubbub over Ronda Rousey's admittance to the UFC last night was the fact that she's not the only woman who will be in the UFC. Unless Rousey will be fighting air or a man, she will need a female opponent.
Miesha Tate, the only fighter to last more than a minute with Rousey, said on Twitter that she will be a part of the UFC.
So Stoked to be fighting for the @ufc it's been a dream of mine for along time! SO happy it's finally come true:-D
Since losing by arm bar to Rousey, Tate rehabbed the arm injury she sustained in the loss. She then beat Julie Kedzie with an armbar of her own. If this were a perfect world, she would win another fight to earn a shot against Rousey. But this world is not perfect, and as the Jon Jones-Chael Sonnen title bout reminded us, the UFC wants to make dollars, not sense.
For that reason, expect Tate to be Rousey's first opponent. Their fight in March generated a boatload of buzz as the two women continually called each other out. The card they headlined averaged 431,000 viewers and peaked at 560,000 for their bout. Considering this was on a premium network that costs viewers extra to view, it bodes well for their future as a pay-per-view draw.
There are other candidates to fight Rousey. Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos was the most dominant woman in MMA until she was suspended for using a banned substance. Her suspension will end in mid-December, but she has had trouble getting down to 145 lbs., much less the 135-lb. weight to challenge for Rousey's bantamweight belt. Like Rousey, Sara McMann has an undefeated record and Olympic credentials, having won a silver medal in wrestling in 2004. But she is not well-known, and the UFC will want to make a splash with their first women's bout.
Who do you think should Rousey should face first? Speak up in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.
ALMATY, Kazakhstan (AP) ? Russia's largest mobile telecommunications company said Friday that a court in Uzbekistan has reversed a September ruling to seize assets belonging to its subsidiary in the Central Asian nation but also slapped it with a fine.
MTS said in an emailed statement that an appeals court in the capital, Tashkent, imposed a $600 million penalty to compensate for alleged tax evasion and embezzlement at the Moscow-based company's subsidiary, Uzdunrobita.
Uzdunrobita, which operates under the brand name MTS Uzbekistan, had suspended operations in mid-July at the request of Uzbek authorities, denying service to around 9.5 million customers, around two-fifths of the entire population.
The high-profile case has threated to derail attempts by Uzbekistan to attract international investors to the ex-Soviet nation, which has seen multiple state-led seizures of private businesses.
MTS said the Tashkent City Court appeals board ordered Thursday that it pay the $600 million penalty over eight months.
"We are satisfied that MTS's position was heard during the judicial process and that the company's demands have in part been met," MTS chief executive Andrei Dubovskov said in the statement.
Tashkent Criminal Court's order in September to confiscate Uzdunrobita's assets came in conjunction with the sentencing of four company managers to 2 ? in jail for embezzlement.
MTS said the verdict against the Uzdunrobita managers remains in force.
MTS says it has invested around $1.1 billion into its Uzbek business since buying a 74 percent stake in Uzdunrobita in 2004. It acquired the remaining stake in successive years.
Uzdunrobita was formerly owned by Gulnara Karimova, the daughter of Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov.
Karimova sold the company to MTS in 2004 at what market watchers said was an above-market price.
Former Uzdunrobita business partner, Sanjar Umarov, has claimed Karimova pushed him out of the company.
ScienceDaily (Nov. 9, 2012) ? Peanut allergies are rising among American children and one reason might be due to economic status. According to a new study presented at the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI) Annual Scientific Meeting, greater rates of peanut allergy are found in families with higher economic status. This supports the "hygiene hypothesis" of many allergists.
This theory believes that a lack of early childhood exposure to germs increases the chance for allergic diseases. Over sanitization might suppress the natural development of the immune system.
"Overall household income is only associated with peanut sensitization in children aged one to nine years," said allergist Sandy Yip, M.D., Major, USAF, lead study author and ACAAI member. "This may indicate that development of peanut sensitization at a young age is related to affluence, but those developed later in life are not."
The study examined 8,306 patients, 776 of which had an elevated antibody level to peanuts. Peanut allergy was generally higher in males and racial minorities across all age groups. Researchers also found that peanut specific antibody levels peaked in an age group of 10- to 19-year-old children, but tapered off after middle age.
"While many children can develop a tolerance to food allergens as they age, only 20 percent will outgrow a peanut allergy," said allergist Stanley Fineman, M.D., ACAAI president. "It's important that children remain under the care of a board-certified allergist to receive treatment."
According to the ACAAI, peanut allergy affects an estimated 400,000 school-aged children. It is one of the food allergens most commonly associated with sudden and severe reactions such as anaphylaxis. While avoiding peanuts may not be as difficult as avoiding wheat, there is often the risk of cross-contamination by food manufacturers.
The ACAAI recommends peanut-allergic individuals be vigilant in restaurants, where peanuts may appear as a hidden ingredient. Some chefs may use peanut butter in the preparation of sauces or marinades. Those with food allergies should also carry allergist prescribed epinephrine in the event of an emergency.
Information about food allergies can be found at AllergyAndAsthmaRelief.org. More news and research from the annual meeting, being held Nov. 8-13, 2012 can be followed via Twitter at #ACAAI.

The nearly nude dancer climbed atop me as if I were a jungle gym. She tossed her hair and gyrated her hips downward, pressing her buttocks into my lap. ?Spread your legs wider. Let me get in there,? she said before swinging around and rubbing her chest across my face. When she leaned back, I had breast sweat on my askew glasses. A photo taken by a friend shows a red oval outline on my forehead that could be an injury or giant ringworm. In fact, it is a lip print from the dancer. I went to the nude juice bar Nite Moves in Latham at the behest of the Comedy Central show ?The Colbert Report,? which was eager to exploit the humorous potential of a tax dispute between the club and New York state. My role in the segment of the show, which aired Thursday night, was to review the dancing from an artistic perspective. I seem to have been insufficiently compensatory for my dancer?s services, performed in the club?s main room, because she said, ?You need to read up on strip clubs and strippers.? A buddy handed her more cash. Although chastised and apparently clueless about tipping nuances, I still recognized that what I?d been watching was art. The state Court of Appeals disagrees. In a split decision released Oct. 24, New York?s highest court ruled 4-3 against Nite Moves, which has been arguing that its dancers? performances are akin to ballet and thus entry fees and payments for lap dances are not subject to sales tax. The club?s outstanding tax bill is about $400,000.
?Writing should always reflect a piece of yourself,? renowned journalist turned best-selling novelist Carlton Stowers informed a group of Baylor students and professors last Tuesday. ?You?ve got to put a little bit of yourself into your story,? Carlton continued, ?You?ve got to feel it.?
Carlton Stowers is the author of more than two-dozen works of nonfiction, including the Edgar Award-winning Careless Whispers and the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Innocence Lost. His writing is an inspiration for aspiring screenwriters, poets, and fiction and non-fiction writers alike. About 50 students attended Carlton?s meeting, or more accurately, workshop, on the writing process.
Ruth Sabin was one of the students who attended simply to see if she could glean any of his esteemed wisdom that could help her writing. ?As a writer, I think it?s important to go to these events and learn from a ?master? writer,? Ruth said, ?I?m a master?s student in Film and Digital Media, and a lot of time [sic] people think I already know everything I need to know about writing. Not true. I learned a lot about involving emotion in my writing from Mr. Stowers.?
True-crime author Carlton stressed the importance of ?involving yourself in your story.? To the journalists in the room, he challenged what they had been taught previously by saying:
?People say it?s important as a reporter to stay detached from the subject, and not let the reader into your head. But that?s bull, forget that. If you don?t involve yourself in the story, like if you?re doing a profile or research article or a book, you?re doing it wrong.?
A lot of students seemed to respond to this comment positively. James Martin, a junior studying Chemistry, skipped one of his classes just to hear him speak, simply because journalism and writing is a hobby of his. ?I?ve loved his books. I?ve read three of them so far, and several of his past magazine articles,? James continued excitedly, ?His comment on how you shouldn?t be ?detached? from the subject you are writing on really hit home. I get so clinical with my subject, it was good to be reminded to actually care.?
Currently living with his wife in Cedar Hill, Texas, the 57-year-old novelist describes himself as a ?self-employed book writer.? Carlton Stowers has made writing his career for 30 to 40 years. With several of his books inspiring movies or TV shows, this true-crime author has the platform to speak to people on the writing process.
?You need to get into their mindset, and once you get there? do you have the tools necessary to tell the story in a proper way,? acclaimed author Stowers stressed to the front row of his audience. ?Emotion is one of the most important things as a writer. If you didn?t evoke a reaction from your reader, there?s something missing in what you?ve done.?
Carlton explained that the key to finding your passion in writing is to discover you?re ?niche.? It doesn?t matter if it?s business, sports, music, or anything else. He concluded the meeting simply by saying, ?Whatever gets your motor running is what you are going to best write about. If you don?t care, you will be miserable.??

My life has been a series of adventures. Anything that sounds mildly to extremely dangerous I am not only all for it, but I will be the one with hand anxiously waving asking to go first. I am 21, a student at Baylor, and loving life.
Of those of you who have a manufactured one or have made your own captured hollowing system how far do the bars that "capture" or hold the tool extend to the front and back of the lathe? I would think the side nearest the turner would just about be equal to the front part of the ways of the lathe. And there would be a lot more in front of the lathe. Im just trying to get an idea on how much to put where. I will have pieces of steel 36" ,long to make this part and just dont excess in my way but dont want it too short either. Thanks !!!
I have the Oneway Deep Hollowing System and it mounts so that the capturing device extends towards the back of the lathe. If you think of how you hollow, you are cutting on the near (front of the lathe) side of the vessel, not the far side, because of the rotation of the lathe. Therefore you would want to position the bar farther toward the back of the lathe in order to get inside the shoulder of the vessel. Hope this helps.
Yep that is what I was thinking. From what Ive read some have 10" to the front or to the side the turner is on and the rest..Maybe 28 or so to the backside...away from the turner
