Samsung Galaxy S4 vs. iPhone 5 design direction videos

Apple typically accompanies the announcement of a new iPhone 5 with a video showcasing their design and manufacturing processes. Samsung has now done something similar for their just-released Galaxy S4. So how do the two videos compare, and what, if anything, do they tell us about the respective companies and phones?

Before we get to the videos, it's worthwhile taking a quick look at how Apple and Samsung handle the devices in general. Here's Apple's phone product logo, which uses a single typeface, compared to Samsung's, which uses different typefaces for both Galaxy and 4, and a highly stylized S in between:

Galaxy S4 vs. iPhone 5 logos

In Samsung's video, which includes the now oft-repeated "Life Companion" tag line, they start off with a quick series of initially unidentified people (we later find out they're UX -- user experience -- designers), who set the stage for a) wanting to go deeper into people's lives, b) be more evolutionary than radically different, c) be like nothing anyone has ever seen before, and d) change people's lives for the better. (Note: the video is in Korean with English subtitles, so there could be cultural differences and contexts that are lost in translation.)

Apple's video, which is actually more of a general product video that also touches on design, begins with Jony Ive, senior vice president of industrial design, who sets up a) the phone as the most-used object in people's lives, b) how seriously Apple takes that relationship, and c) how Apple's goal is not to make something new but something much better.

Samsung's video includes people set in more realistic environments, and a ton of b-roll showing stars, cityscapes, and other dramatic visuals. Apple's video sets everyone on backgrounds of pure white, and b-roll consists exclusively of shots of the iPhone itself, the technology inside it, and the equipment used to manufacture it.

Samsung's UX designers go on to describe how the phone has evolved from information system to life companion, and how they began to think about how they could use it to offer more meaningful value. They showcase features like the eye-tracking page scrolling and video pausing, and the on-hover contextual popups. And they call out the automatic photo album generation.

Apple's Jony Ive explains their decision to increase the screen size to 4-inches by making it taller but not wider (the old one-handed-ease-of-use argument). Bob Mansfield, senior vice-president (of technology) explains some of the new hardware features like LTE and the Apple A6, and Lightning connector. Scott Forstall, former vice president of iOS, then goes over iOS 6 software features like Maps, Panorama photos, Siri enhancements like sports and restaurant reservations, Facebook integration, and FaceTime over celular.

Samsung's Hyoungshin Park, product designer, explains that while the Galaxy S3 had more nature-centric design cues, the Galaxy S4 was meant to be more "rationale" in approach (that has to be a translation glitch, right?) and with more emotional CMF (?). Jongbo Jung, product designer, then describes the GS4 as a precious gem glittering in the dark or stars sparkling in the night sky. They paid attention to the smallest detail and refined it to perfection. They wanted to find the perfect line.

Apple returns to Jonny Ive, who talks not only about the very nearly insane precision of the manufacturing process, but about how the iPhone feels in your hand, and the importance of the materials they use -- glass and aluminum.

Samsung says nothing about the feeling or importance of their plastics. They do repeat the importance of making people's lives better. Mihnyouk Lee, vice president of product design, says Samsung believes they can create something new and valuable.

Apple's Jony Ive says they began the iPhone 5 with a design they loved, but to implement it, it took everything they'd learned to date. Simple, clear, truly extraordinary.

Samsung ends with: Life Companion, for a richer, simpler, fuller life.

Apple ends with: Apple logo.

Samsung's video does make Apple's look clinical, almost sterile at times, but the simplicity Apple brings to every element makes Samsung look undisciplined, almost unrefined.

What's most interesting is that two companies with such different styles and products are both sitting atop the smartphone space right now.

Parents struggle with funding the high cost of college educations

Brian Kerr admits that when it comes to ideas for funding his children's college educations, "unfortunately, I don't have a great plan."

Which is why the father of quadruplets ? all juniors at Heritage High School in Littleton ? recently reached out to an unlikely source for assistance.

"I contacted Dr. Drew," Kerr said, referring to Drew Pinsky, who, besides being an internist, and radio and television host, is also the father of triplets.

"He's got more cheese than I do, but he sent back some reference materials," said Kerr, who added that he's taking an upcoming week off from his job to immerse himself in applications and financial-aid forms. "I was surprised, but right now, I'm looking at any angles that I can."

All across the state, there are families in similar pursuits, whether it's trying to get money for a future student or coming up with ways for current ones to fund their educations in the wake

Apps of the Week: Plants vs Zombies, ArtRage, Iron Man 3, and more

Every week, the editors and writers at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps, accessories, gadgets, and websites. This week's selections include a few games, an art app, a fun music creation app, and an app about the most important star in the universe.

Mr. Runner 2: The Masks - Simon Sage

Mr. Runner was a pretty popular game a few years ago, netting over 5 million downloads thanks to its unique stop-and-go play style and slightly warped sense of humor. Mr. Runner is back with some decidedly richer graphics and a surprisingly interesting plot line. Mr. Runner is trapped in a dream where his head is locked in a box by the dastardly La Magie, and he's got to chase down the key. In this journey, he stumbles on the occasional mask which gives him some semblance of an identity in the meantime. The game will take players through 32 bizarre worlds with plenty of tongue-in-cheek pop culture references. Each stage has three bonus objectives to snag, which should keep you coming back for more if the unique art style isn't enough. If you're in the mood for something a little different, definitely give Mr. Runner 2: The Masks a shot.

ArtRage - Michelle Haag

My daughter is obsessed with drawing My Little Pony characters these days. She's almost 10, and asked me recently if she could have a really good art app for the iPad so she could get more comfortable when she's creating, as opposed to sitting in front of the laptop. We searched around and found ArtRage, and it has quickly become her favorite new tool when inspiration strikes.

ArtRage has a ton of built in features including numerous art tools for drawing and painting, tracing, blending, different types of canvas/papers, and one of our favorite features which is the ability to work with layers. Learning how to sketch is an important step for artists, and with the layers Abby is learning to sketch and refine her drawings. The tools are very natural and mimic real world paints and papers very well, even going so far as to judge how much paint is on your brush or canvas and reacting accordingly, among other things.

If you're interested in having an art studio that you can take with you anywhere, you should definitely take a look at ArtRage. There are so many tools and options in this app, I can't even list them all here. Some reviewers have complained about the app crashing, but we haven't experienced that. I would recommend saving your work frequently if that's a concern. ArtRage is available for iPad and iPhone, for $4.99 and $1.99 respectively.

Iron Man 3 - The Official Game - Chris Parsons

We got our first look at Gameloft's Iron Man 3 at GDGC 2013 and ever since then I've been waiting to get my hands on it. Having now arrived and readily available for download, I have to say it's pretty awesome and even better than I expected. You get to play as Iron Man through 3 different locations and fight 4 villains from Iron Man legend, all in some wonderfully graphic detail. Perhaps the best part of it all though, is gaining access to all of the Iron Man suits available. There is 18 in total that ken be discovered including Mark II, Mark III and the Silver Centurion. The game is available for free but keep in mind it does have a few in-app-purchases with it. I've not played through enough to see if they're 'required' - yet!

Figure - Joseph Keller

Propellerhead?s Figure is a great app for music creation for the iPhone and iPad. Figure gives users control over the different instruments available under the Drum, Bass, and Lead sections. Set the rhythm of each instrument, the number of scale steps between octaves, and range of the bass and lead instruments, along with basics like the key and the tempo. There are also a variety of electronic drum, bass, and lead instruments to choose from. Figure also includes support for Audiobus, allowing you to record and edit your music using other music apps like Loopy and Garageband. Try Figure if you?re looking for quick, simple electronic music creation that?s also a lot of fun to use.

Plants vs. Zombies - Ally Kazmucha

There are very few games that remain on my iPhone consistently and Plants vs. Zombies is definitely one of them. In anticipation of Plants vs. Zombies 2 which is supposedly launching sometime this summer, I've cleared out all my data and have started playing the original Plants vs. Zombies all over again.

The fact that there is no support for the iPhone 5 is definitely a downer and makes me that much more impatient for the second release. My favorite part about Plants vs. Zombies is that even after beating the entire game, you can always go back and unlock all kinds of achievements. That's what I plan to do and cross my fingers that Plants vs. Zombies 2 isn't that far off from being released for iOS. If you haven't checked it out, it's one of those iOS games that every iPhone or iPad owner should download and considering they're both at the low price of $0.99 now, there really isn't anything to lose.

Sun by KIDS DISCOVER - Leanna Lofte

I love science, and I love when kids show an interest in science, which is why I'm choosing Sun by KIDS DISCOVER this week. It teaches a lot of fun facts about the Earth's light source and includes great images, graphics, 3D models, videos, and more. And with summer right around the corner, the timing seems perfect for discussion about this season's favorite heat supplier.

If you've got kids who can read, check it out.

Google+ - Rene Ritchie

I'm still trying to figure out the whole social expectation angle -- Twitter, Facebook, Google+, App.net, Dribbble, Instagram... and the list seemingly goes on and on. There's just not enough time in the day to properly engage with all of them. I use Twitter a lot. I try to use App.net. I've pretty much abandoned Facebook. And I've neglected Google+ because every time I go there, it feels like only Google people are there.

Blame Cali Lewis and John P. Blame Phil Nickinson. Blame #TM13. But I've started trying to use Google+ again. I know I've said that before. And I might well have to try saying it again. The Google + app for iOS has come a long way however, and it's a pretty good user experience now. I guess time will tell.

The truth is I find social overwhelming right now. I think I'll primarily end up using Google+ for DSLR images and the occasional social commentary that I don't want to spam people on Twitter with.

Since I'm guessing I'm not the only one caught like a deer-in-the-social-headlights right now, let me know how you're organizing your sharing. What are you putting where, and how are you managing it all?

You can tell me, or just find me, on Google+ at +Rene Ritchie

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

Day 3 draft recap: Biggest hits and misses

Sunday, April 28, 2013

Day three of the draft is not for the faint of heart, especially when its most notable prospect comes off the board with the first pick. That was the case on Saturday, where the Eagles traded up to get Matt Barkley at No. 98. But for those patient and diehard enough to dive into it, there?s every bit as much entertainment to be found on day three as there is on day one or two. Here are the most notable developments from the third and final day of the 2013 NFL Draft. ??

GOT SOME HARD BARK ON HIM

Fair or not, Matt Barkley was pretty much the dictionary definition of a ?pretty boy? heading into his senior season at USC. Eight months, six losses, one separated shoulder and 98 draft picks later, the ?pretty boy? has some hard earned new ?character.? The notion that Barkley would have been a guaranteed first-round pick had he declared last season is deeply flawed. Would he have gone higher than No. 98? Without a doubt. But the same deficiencies that sent Barkley tumbling down the board this year ? a weak arm, limited mobility, little room to grow ? would have shown up on tape last year, too. Barkley as a surefire top-ten pick was a media creation, and as we learned time and again this weekend, the draft can be painful for prospects whose tape doesn?t match their hype.

Now Barkley needs to rely on his qualities that don?t show up on tape. For all the hand wringing over his arm strength, he?s gained plaudits for his leadership and attitude. If Barkley is going to carve out an NFL career, it will have to be on the back of his accuracy and intangibles. Of course, even that might not be enough in Philadelphia, where despite Chip Kelly?s protestations to the contrary, the idea that a QB as lead-footed as Barkley can succeed in his lightning-paced offense just isn?t realistic. It?s going to be a tough couple of years for the football world?s former No. 1 pretty boy, but he can survive them if he displays something his detractors swear he doesn?t have: True grit. ????

FREE FALL OF THE NIGHT

Tyler Bray was never viewed as an early-round pick. Despite his rocket arm and massive 6-foot-6 frame, he was too inconsistent on-the-field, and too much of a headache off of it. But it?s fair to say a player whose arm has drawn comparisons to Joe Flacco and Ryan Mallett?s wasn?t expected to slide all the way off the draft board. That?s exactly what Bray did, watching 254 other players ? 11 of whom were quarterbacks ? get their names called as he stared at a phone that wouldn?t ring. As far as undrafted free agents go, Bray made a soft landing. He?s headed to Kansas City, where the race for No. 3 duties is wide open, and he?ll get to work with one of the top QB gurus of his era in Andy Reid. But a player who left Tennessee a year early is almost certainly wondering what might have been had he spent one more year in college honing his scattershot craft. Odds are, Bray?s draft-weekend wait wouldn?t have been so interminable in 2014.

FREE FALL OF THE NIGHT II

Two former Tennessee Volunteers can play this game. But therein lies the first difference. Whereas Tyler Bray chose to become a former Vol, Da?Rick Rogers was given no choice but to transfer after earning an indefinite suspension last August. Rogers was banned for failing multiple drug tests and clashing with coaches. He ended up at FCS Tennessee Tech, where he lit up the stat sheet to the tune of 78 catches for 1,207 yards and 11 touchdowns. This, after he posted a 67/1,040/9 line his final year at Tennessee. At 6-foot-3, 217 pounds with 4.52 wheels, Rogers has the measurables to go along with the production. He just doesn?t have the attitude, which is why he joined Bray in his descent into undrafted territory. Rogers quickly signed as an UDFA with the Bills, who placed an emphasis on finding freak athletes this year. Rogers certainly qualifies, but it won?t mean anything if he can?t fall in line. If he does, he has a chance to be this year?s Vontaze Burfict: A decorated but disgraced former elite prospect who makes good after being given a second chance. Rogers has the talent, now he needs the sense. ??????

BIGGEST MISS BY MOCK DRAFTS

Johnathan Franklin was the first running back off the board on day three. That?s all good and well, but many projected him to be the first running back off the board, period. By the time the dust had settled, five runners had found new homes before Franklin. ?Why?? isn?t exactly clear. Unlike last year?s big RB faller, Chris Polk, Franklin doesn?t have any obvious medical concerns. His 4.49 speed is more than adequate for a player his size (5-foot-10, 205), while he?s been compared to Frank Gore, Doug Martin, Ray Rice and Warrick Dunn, among others. He?s solid both between the tackles and in the passing game. Whatever it was, one of the smartest talent evaluators in the game in Ted Thompson decided he couldn?t watch Franklin fall any further even though he had already used the No. 61 pick on Eddie Lacy. Now Franklin and Lacy have the opportunity to form one of the league?s top ?thunder and lightning? duos as rookies. The presence of the other means neither is likely to emerge as an RB1, but at worst, we could have a pair of RB3s on our hands. ????

BIGGEST REACH OF THE NIGHT

While it?s hard to call the No. 237 pick a reach, it?s even harder to call B.J. Daniels a quarterback. The newest 49er threw for just 52 career touchdowns at USF despite being a four-year starter and attempting over 1,100 passes. That?s not to mention his 39 picks or 57.2 completion percentage. Daniels has some running ability, but not enough to suggest he has a legitimate shot at becoming the next Brad Smith or Antwaan Randle El. The 49ers had an excellent weekend, but capped it off with a truly baffling pick.

Police ID suspect in Illinois shootout that killed 5

MANCHESTER, Ill. (AP) ? The nephew of a small-town Illinois mayor shot and killed five people, including two boys, before leading police on a chase that ended in an exchange of gunfire that left him dead, authorities said Wednesday.

Illinois State Police said they believe Rick O. Smith, 43, entered the Manchester home through the back door and shot the victims at close range, leaving two women, one man and the boys dead. Two people were found in a bedroom, two in a second bedroom and the man in the hallway. A sixth victim, a 6-year-old girl, was injured and taken to a Springfield hospital.

"The offender took the 6-year-old out of the residence and put her in the hands of a neighbor," State Police Lt. Col. Todd Kilby said.

Officials have not revealed a motive for the killings. Police said the victims are related and they believe Smith and the victims were acquainted but they didn't provide details of the relationships.

A bystander called police and told them that Smith fled the home in a white sedan. A car chase ensued, leading authorities to the nearby town of Winchester, where Smith and officers exchanged gunfire. Officers shot Smith, and he later died at a hospital.

Police said they found a rifle, shotgun and large hunting knife in Smith's car.

Coroner officials said they plan autopsies on the victims Thursday morning in Bloomington and identities would be released at that time.

Scott County State's Attorney Michael Hill said Smith, of rural Morgan County, had previous convictions for reckless homicide, drugs and bad checks.

Manchester Mayor Ronald Drake confirmed that Smith was his nephew, saying he hadn't spoken to Smith in two years, but he believed his nephew was unemployed. Drake said the last time Smith contacted him was to borrow tools.

In Manchester, yellow police tape surrounded the small one-story brick home where the victims were found. Manchester is a village of about 300 residents located about 50 miles west of Springfield.

"It's a close-knit community," Drake said. "Everybody talks to everybody. ... We enjoy that goes on (in) town. This is just a tragedy for (the) whole town."

Manchester resident Julie Hardwick, 48, said she lives in the same county housing authority complex as the victims. Authorities told her she couldn't return to her home yet because of the investigation, she said.

"The kids were really nice," Hardwick said of the family. "You couldn't ask for better kids."

The Rev. Robin Lyons of Manchester United Methodist Church, one of two churches in the community said, "this shows tragedy can happen anywhere."

Two area school superintendents said they received calls from county sheriffs before 6 a.m. informing them that five people had been shot to death at a house in Manchester and that a suspect was at large.

Superintendent David Roberts of the Winchester School District and Les Stevens of the North Greene Unit District No. 3 both said they immediately canceled classes when they were told of the shootings and that other school districts did the same.

Roberts said the wounded girl is a student at Winchester Grade School and her teacher was with her at the Springfield hospital.

The school will use its own counselor, nurse and other staff members to help students who need to talk, Roberts said. Other area districts have offered to help too.

Roberts said he also will call on area ministers to be available on campus. "I've found that to be helpful in the past," he said.

Calif. grocer tries to profit off botched burglary

REDDING, Calif. (AP) ? A Northern California grocery store owner is trying to profit from a suspected thief's botched burglary attempt that was caught on video and went viral.

Footage shows the man breaking the Redding store's window last month and tripping twice as he ran away.

Now store owner Kent Pfrimmer has turned it into a television commercial for his business, Kent's Meats and Groceries.

The Record Searchlight of Redding reports (http://bit.ly/11CzlcU ) that the ad for the store's pastrami features footage of the suspect throwing something at the store's window. The sound of shattering glass can be heard before pastrami appears on camera, followed by the voice-over: "So good, some people will do just about anything to get more."

A call to Redding police to check on the investigation was not immediately returned.

Another China official dies during party detention

BEIJING (AP) ? A senior official at a city court in central China died under mysterious circumstances, his body bruised after 11 days in the custody of anti-graft investigators of the ruling Communist Party, his family said.

Jia Jiuxiang, who was vice president of the Sanmenxia City Intermediate People's Court in Henan province, is the second case in two weeks to surface of an official dying while being held in the party's secret detention system, which is not regulated by law.

Jia's relatives say they suspect he was tortured in detention.

His brother-in-law, Zhou Qiang, said Jia was detained April 12 by the local party's discipline inspection committee and turned up in a local hospital Monday night and died Tuesday morning after attempts to save him failed.

Jia's wife, who was allowed to see the body, said his face had turned blue and his body was covered in bruises, Zhou said.

"We think that in handling the case, the discipline inspection committee used cruel tactics against him," Zhou said. He said that Jia, 49, had been in good health.

Another relative, Ma Weihua, who identified himself as Jia's nephew, confirmed details of Zhou's account and said local officials told the relatives that they would conduct an investigation into Jia's death.

A man at the party's Sanmenxia politics and law committee surnamed Song said officials at the committee were aware of the case, but he had no further details.

Ma also said he had heard that Jia was taken in by anti-graft investigators because he had been implicated by another court official who was being investigated. The court could not be reached for comment.

Earlier this month, a senior engineer at a government investment company in the eastern city of Wenzhou died after 38 days in the custody of anti-graft officials. The official, Yu Qiyi, has become a rallying point for reformers who want to do away with the party's secret detention system that is prone to abuse but which Chinese leaders depend on to keep members in line.

Reading into the brain to understand how neurons represent the world

We know the world through the sensory representations within our brain. Such "reconstruction" is performed through the electrical activation of neural cells, the code that contains the information that is constantly processed by the brain. If we wish to understand what are the rules followed by the representation of the world inside the brain we have to comprehend how electrical activation is linked to the sensory experience. For this reason, a team of researchers including Mathew Diamond, Houman Safaai and Moritz von Heimendahl of the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste have analyzed the behavior and the activation of neural networks in rats while they were carrying out tactile object recognition tests.

During the experiments researchers observed the performance of rats the animals were discriminating one texture from another along with the activation of a group of sensory neurons. "For the first time the study has monitored the activity of multiple neurons, while until now, due to technical limitations, researchers had examined only individual neurons," explains Diamond, who heads up the Tactile Perception and Learning Lab at SISSA. "The activity of such groups of neurons is represented in our model as multi-dimensional clouds, comprising as many dimensions as the number of cells under examination (up to ten). We have observed a different cloud for the contact with each different texture."

By analyzing the "clouds", Diamond and his colleagues were able to successfully decode the object contacted by the rodent. "Our method is so accurate that when the rat would mistake one object for another, the decoding would also indicate a different object from the one actually touched. And this happened because the representation made by the brain and, as a consequence, our decoding appeared like that of a different object. Hence the error."

Diamond's team has no intention of stopping here. "In real life, we generally recognize objects using more senses all together, in an integrated manner. We use touch and sight at the same time, for instance," explains Diamond. "For this reason we are now working on new experiments employing more neurons, with more complicated stimuli, and more senses, to build 'multimodal' representations of objects."

More in detail...

This kind of "mind reading" carried out on rats' brain by Diamond and his colleagues is important to understand how the brain forms a representation of the world. "Each one of us perceives a physical world outside ourselves, yet actually all we have at our disposal to create an experience of the world is the representation that our brain makes of it through the input of sensory organs" says Diamond.

To understand that such a representation is at the very least partial it is enough to think of all the information about the world that escapes us all the time: for instance, we are blind to infrared and ultraviolet rays, we are unable to hear certain sound frequencies or smell some chemical substances or others. Some details pertaining to the physical world are completely invisible or, to put it better, imperceptible (others are interpreted incorrectly, like visual illusions, for example.)

This is a further demonstration that what we perceive is not the physical world in itself, but the neuronal activation the world evokes inside our brain.
